Andreas Krause
Andreas Krause is an ETH Zurich computer scientist whose work helps learning systems gather information and make decisions under uncertainty. He studied at the Technical University of Munich and Carnegie Mellon, then moved from Caltech to ETH Zurich. His GP-UCB work linked Gaussian-process optimization with bandit theory and received ICML’s 2020 Test of Time Award. ETH Zurich awarded him the 2021 Rössler Prize, and ACM named him to its 2023 Fellow class for contributions to learning-based decision making under uncertainty. He joined the UN Secretary-General’s AI Advisory Body in 2023; by January 2024, he led ETH’s Learning & Adaptive Systems Group, chaired its AI Center and co-directed the Swiss Data Science Center.

Timeline
-
2004–2008
Learning to gather information
He completes a master’s degree at the Technical University of Munich in 2004, then earns a computer science doctorate at Carnegie Mellon in 2008 with a thesis on optimal information gathering.
-
2009–2011
Moving from Caltech to ETH
He becomes an assistant professor at Caltech in 2009, then joins ETH Zurich in 2011.
-
2010–2020
Connecting bandits and Bayesian search
With Niranjan Srinivas, Sham Kakade and Matthias Seeger, he publishes the ICML 2010 paper “Gaussian Process Optimization in the Bandit Setting: No Regret and Experimental Design.” Its GP-UCB method links Gaussian-process optimization with bandit theory and establishes regret bounds for Bayesian optimization; the paper receives ICML’s 2020 Test of Time Award.
-
2021
A prize for active learning
His work explores active learning and learning agents. He receives ETH Zurich’s 2021 Rössler Prize, its most generous research award.
-
October 2023
Joining a UN AI advisory group
He is named to the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Body on AI in October 2023. The body supports international efforts to govern artificial intelligence.
-
January 2024
A fellowship for decision research
ACM names him to its 2023 Fellow class for contributions to learning-based decision making under uncertainty. At ETH Zurich, he leads the Learning & Adaptive Systems Group, chairs the ETH AI Center and serves as Academic Co-Director of the Swiss Data Science Center.
-
As of October 2026
A professor in Zurich
He is a Professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich.
