Researcher

Gong Cheng

Also known as 程塨

Gong Cheng is a computer-vision researcher whose work spans object detection, remote-sensing scene classification and visual tracking. He earned degrees at Xidian University and Northwestern Polytechnical University, then coauthored papers introducing RIFD-CNN and the NWPU-RESISC45 benchmark. His papers received IEEE GRSS Highest Impact Paper Awards in 2021 and 2023; a coauthored co-saliency paper also won the IEEE TCSVT Best Paper Award in 2021. As of October 2026, he is a professor in Northwestern Polytechnical University's School of Automation.

Timeline

  1. 2007–2013

    Degrees from Xidian and NWPU

He earns a B.S. from Xidian University in 2007, an M.S. from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2010 and a Ph.D. there in 2013.

  2. 2016

    RIFD-CNN for object detection

With Peicheng Zhou and Junwei Han, he proposes RIFD-CNN for object detection in 2016. The model combines a rotation-invariant layer with a Fisher discriminative layer.

  3. 2017

    NWPU-RESISC45 benchmark

He coauthors a survey of remote-sensing image scene classification with Junwei Han and Xiaoqiang Lu in 2017. The paper introduces NWPU-RESISC45, a public benchmark of 31,500 images across 45 scene classes.

  4. May 2021

    IEEE TCSVT Best Paper Award

In May 2021, his 2018 paper with Junwei Han on co-saliency detection receives the IEEE TCSVT Best Paper Award.

  5. July 2021

    GRSS award for object detection

In July 2021, his 2016 paper with Peicheng Zhou and Junwei Han on rotation-invariant CNNs for object detection receives the IEEE GRSS Highest Impact Paper Award.

  6. 2023

    GRSS scene-classification award

In 2023, his 2018 paper with Junwei Han and colleagues on remote-sensing image scene classification receives the IEEE GRSS Highest Impact Paper Award.

  7. June 2025

    RGB-T UAV tracking

Published online in June 2025, he coauthors a feature-cooperative reconstruction method for RGB-T UAV tracking with Dong Gao and Pujian Lai. It uses a cross-modal interaction encoder and feature reconstruction decoder to combine visible-light and thermal-infrared information.

  8. As of October 2026

Professor in the School of Automation

As of October 2026, he is a professor in the School of Automation at Northwestern Polytechnical University. His research interests include computer vision, pattern recognition and remote-sensing image analysis.
