Researcher

Qi Wang

Also known as 王琦

Qi Wang studies computer vision, pattern recognition, and cross-domain image analysis. He earned degrees at the University of Science and Technology of China and held postdoctoral and associate professor roles before becoming a professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University. His papers introduced a large synthetic crowd dataset and methods for adapting crowd counters to real scenes. IAPR elected him a Fellow in 2026 for contributions to cross-domain image analysis and service to the association. As of October 2026, he is a professor in iOPEN at Northwestern Polytechnical University.

Timeline

  1. 2001–2010

    Education in pattern recognition

At the University of Science and Technology of China, he earns a bachelor's degree in automation in 2005 and a doctorate in pattern recognition and intelligent systems in 2010.

  2. 2010–2017

    Postdoctoral and faculty roles

He completes postdoctoral work at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics from 2010 to 2013. He serves as an associate professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University from January 2014 to June 2017.

  3. 2019

    Learning from synthetic data

In 2019, Wang, Junyu Gao, Wei Lin, and Yuan Yuan publish Learning From Synthetic Data for Crowd Counting in the Wild at CVPR. They build a large, diverse synthetic crowd dataset and propose supervised pretraining and domain adaptation for crowd counting in real scenes.

  4. 2021

    Pixel-wise crowd understanding

In 2021, Wang, Junyu Gao, Wei Lin, and Yuan Yuan publish Pixel-wise Crowd Understanding via Synthetic Data in the International Journal of Computer Vision. It uses labeled Grand Theft Auto V scenes to build the GCC dataset and applies supervised learning and domain adaptation to crowd counting and segmentation.

  5. 2026

    An IAPR fellowship

In 2026, IAPR elects him a Fellow for contributions to cross-domain image analysis and service to the association.

  6. Since 2017

    Professor at NPU

As of October 2026, he is a professor in the School of Artificial Intelligence, Optics and Electronics (iOPEN) at Northwestern Polytechnical University.
