Gaurav Sharma
Gaurav Sharma is a University of Rochester professor whose research spans computer vision, machine learning, color science, and QR-code security. He studied engineering in India and the United States, worked at Xerox from 1996 to 2003, and joined Rochester in 2003. He coauthored a paper on CIEDE2000, used machine learning to analyze patients' sensor data, and joined a color-vision project; IEEE named him a Fellow in 2013. IIT Roorkee named him a 2025 Distinguished Alumnus Awardee, and a WIPO publication in 2026 listed him as an inventor of self-authenticating barcodes. As of October 2026, he is a professor across three Rochester departments.

Timeline
-
1990–2003
Degrees and research at Xerox
He earns a B.E. in electronics and communication engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1990 and a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from North Carolina State University in 1996. His education also includes master's degrees in electrical communication engineering at IISc and applied mathematics at North Carolina State University. From 1996 to 2003, he works at Xerox Research and Technology in Webster, New York, first as a member of research and technology staff and later as Principal Scientist and Project Leader.
-
2003–2007
Joining Rochester and CIEDE2000
At Rochester, he joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2003 and coauthors a 2005 paper on implementation issues and test data for CIEDE2000. He receives tenure in 2007.
-
2013
A 2013 IEEE Fellowship
IEEE names him a Fellow in 2013 for contributions to electronic imaging and media security.
-
2017–2022
Machine learning for health and vision
In 2017, he works with neurologist Ray Dorsey to analyze wearable-sensor data with machine-learning methods for people with Parkinson's disease or Huntington's disease. In 2022, he joins a data-driven virtual-reality project with Yuhao Zhu to improve color vision for people with color-vision deficiency.
-
December 2024
QR codes against phishing
In December 2024, he and Irving Barron develop QR codes that tell smartphone users whether a scanned link is safe or may be a scam.
-
2025
A 2025 Distinguished Alumnus Award
In 2025, IIT Roorkee names him a Distinguished Alumnus Awardee for academic and research excellence.
-
January 2026
A self-authenticating barcode patent
In January 2026, WIPO publishes a University of Rochester patent application that names Sharma and Irving Ricardo Barron Martinez as inventors of self-authenticating two-dimensional barcodes. The design encodes a link with a digital signature that a decoder can verify.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Rochester
As of October 2026, he is a professor in the University of Rochester's Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Biostatistics and Computational Biology. His research interests include data analytics, signal and image processing, computer vision, and media security.
