Lauri Karttunen
Lauri Karttunen connected language semantics with computational methods for interpreting and analysing linguistic forms. Karttunen presented Discourse Referents at COLING in 1969. He explored how an interpreter could record individuals mentioned in text and resolve references to them. Karttunen gave an ACL presentation in 1970 on English predicate complement constructions. He examined how verbs and sentence structures relate to the truth or falsity of embedded clauses.

Finite-state linguistic analysis
He used finite-state transducers for linguistic analysis, from two-level morphology in the early 1980s to commercial applications in the 1990s.

Word Play
Karttunen delivered Word Play when receiving ACL’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The published lecture reviews semantics and morphology and connects semantic issues to textual inference and question answering.
