Researcher

Erik Blasch

Also known as Erik P. Blasch

Erik Blasch researches information fusion, with work spanning sensor analysis, AI certification, and structural monitoring. He earned degrees at MIT, Georgia Tech, and Wright State, led AFRL information-fusion evaluations, and became president of the International Society of Information Fusion in 2007. In 2021, he coauthored a paper on certifiable AI and received the AIAA Information Systems Award; AIAA named him a Fellow in 2022. His 2024 paper introduced PADTHAI-MM, a design framework for trustworthy AI, through the READIT intelligence-reporting platform; in 2025, he presented DDDAS methods for structural-health monitoring that include machine learning and generative AI. As of October 2026, he is a program officer at AFOSR within AFRL; in September 2026, he joined an Intel Summit panel on AI in intelligence operations.

Timeline

  1. 1992–1999

    Engineering degrees

He earns a B.S. in mechanical engineering at MIT in 1992 and master's degrees in mechanical engineering (1994), health science and industrial engineering (human factors) (1995) at Georgia Tech. At Wright State, he completes an MBA and M.S.E.E. in 1998, followed by an M.S. in economics and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1999.

  2. 2000–2017

    Information fusion at AFRL

From 2000 to 2009, he leads information-fusion evaluation at AFRL's Sensors Directorate COMPASE Center, supporting Air Force and DARPA evaluations. He becomes president of the International Society of Information Fusion in 2007, works as an exchange scientist at Defence R&D Canada in Valcartier from 2009 to 2012, and serves as a principal scientist at AFRL's Information Directorate in Rome from 2012 to 2017.

  3. 2021

    Certifiable AI through data fusion

In 2021, he coauthors “Certifiable Artificial Intelligence Through Data Fusion.” The paper reviews challenges in certifying AI systems and presents an image-data-fusion use case for certifying object recognition while considering precision versus distance.

  4. 2021

    AIAA Information Systems Award

In 2021, AIAA gives him the Information Systems Award for technical leadership and innovation in information-fusion systems for avionics, space situational awareness, and airborne sensing.

  5. 2022

    AIAA Fellow

AIAA names him a Fellow in 2022.

  6. 2024

    PADTHAI-MM and READIT

In 2024, he coauthors PADTHAI-MM, an iterative design framework for trustworthy, human-centered AI. The paper demonstrates it through READIT, a research platform that uses data visualizations and natural-language-processing text analysis for intelligence reporting.

  7. 2025

    DDDAS for structural health

At IWSHM in 2025, he presents “DDDAS-based Methods for Structural Health Monitoring.” The talk links multimodal sensing, machine analytics, operator situation awareness, and data fusion; it describes machine learning and generative AI within the DDDAS approach.

  8. As of October 2026

    AFOSR program officer

He is a Program Officer at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) within AFRL. In September 2026, he joins the Intel Summit panel “Elevating Intelligence Operations with AI.”
