David Mackay
Also known as D Mackay, D. J. C. MacKay, D. J. C. Mackay, D. MacKay, D. Mackay
David MacKay was a physicist and machine-learning researcher whose work included Bayesian methods for artificial neural networks and information theory. He studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, earned a PhD in Computation and Neural Systems at Caltech, and returned to Cambridge to lead its Inference Group. With David Ward, he designed Dasher, a 2002 language-model text-entry system; in 2003, he published Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms. He published Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air in 2008, served as the UK's chief scientific adviser on energy from 2009 to 2014, and became Cambridge's inaugural Regius Professor of Engineering in 2013. He was knighted in 2016 for services to scientific advice in government and science outreach, and died in 2016.
Timeline
-
1985–1992
Trinity and a Caltech PhD
At Trinity College, Cambridge, he studies Natural Sciences from 1985 and completes a PhD in Computation and Neural Systems at Caltech in Professor John Hopfield’s research group. In 1992, he returns to Cambridge as a Royal Society research fellow at Darwin College.
-
1992–2003
Cambridge's Inference Group
He becomes a lecturer in the Department of Physics in 1995, a reader in 1999 and professor of Natural Philosophy in 2003. At the department, he starts and leads the Inference Group.
-
2002
Dasher predictive text
In 2002, he and David Ward design Dasher, a text-entry system that uses a language model to make probable character sequences easier to select.
-
2003
Bayesian neural networks and a textbook
His research develops Bayesian methods for artificial neural networks. In 2003, he publishes Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms, a book that remains widely read in the field.
-
2008
Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air
In 2008, he publishes Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air to help people understand the numbers around sustainable energy.
-
2009–2014
The 2050 energy calculator
He serves as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Energy and Climate Change from 2009 to 2014. At the department, he launches a 2050 calculator that lets users control energy demand and supply to reach the UK's 80% CO2 reduction target for 2050.
-
2009–2016
Fellowship, a Regius chair and knighthood
The Royal Society elects him a Fellow in 2009. Cambridge appoints him inaugural Regius Professor of Engineering in 2013, and the 2016 New Year Honours knight him for services to scientific advice in government and science outreach.
-
2016
Death in 2016
He dies in 2016.
