Timeline

  1. By 1995

    A PhD at Darmstadt

A native of Romania, she writes poems as a child, starts composing music at nine, and follows a high-school passion for mathematics into robotics and computer science at university. She completes a PhD in 1995 in computational intelligence applied to systems diagnostics, supervised by Rolf Isermann at Darmstadt University of Technology.

  2. 1997–1998

    Junior Nortel Chair at Calgary

She starts as a lecturer in computer science and information systems at Brunel University in London, then takes a postdoctoral fellowship in 1997 with William Gruver in the Intelligent Manufacturing and Robotics Group at Simon Fraser University. In 1998, she is awarded the Junior Nortel Chair at the University of Calgary.

  3. 2001–2005

    The Canadian GAIN network

In 2001, she founds the Canadian GAIN (Global Agents Integration Network), which joins 19 universities and research institutes with industry to develop intelligent web services for collaborative virtual organizations. Her main contribution as its leader is the Holonic Enterprise paradigm. In 2002, she founds the Emergent Information Systems Laboratory at the University of Calgary, which she leads until 2005.

  4. 2005–2012

    Professor at New Brunswick

From 2005 to 2012, she is a tenured professor at the University of New Brunswick, where she founds the Adaptive Risk Management Laboratory and leads large-scale projects funded by NSERC, DRDC, CANARIE and NBIF. She holds the Canada Research Chair in Adaptive Information Infrastructures for the eSociety for five years from 2005, and in 2007 she is appointed to the Science, Technology and Innovation Council of Canada.

  5. 2014

Best paper and a WEF council

In May 2014, a paper she coauthors, "HCI Dilemmas for Context-Aware Support in Intelligence Analysis", is selected as a Best Paper at the ADAPTIVE 2014 conference in Venice. In November 2014, she is appointed to the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Data Driven Development.

  6. 2016

    Blockchain article in Scientific American

In June 2016, she writes "Blockchain Enhances Privacy, Security and Conveyance of Data" for Scientific American. The article is part of a special report on the World Economic Forum's Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2016.

  7. 2024

    AI sessions at EIC 2024

In June 2024, she speaks at EIC 2024 in a session on large language models, "Intelligence in the Age of LLMs: Synthesizing with AI Toward Meta-Knowing", and on a panel asking whether decentralization is the best way to achieve transparency and verifiability in AI.

  8. As of October 2026

    President of the IMPACT Institute

She serves as President of the IMPACT Institute for the Digital Economy and as Chief AI Alchemist at SingularityNET, the blockchain-based network founded in 2017 to develop open, decentralized artificial general intelligence. She also hosts the Mindplex podcast on AI, AGI and ASI.
