David Vernon
David Vernon is an artificial intelligence researcher whose work spans computer vision, cognitive systems, and cognitive robotics. He attended school in Cork, studied engineering at Trinity College Dublin, and began his career as a software engineer at Westinghouse. He coordinated European cognitive-systems networks, helped develop the open-source iCub humanoid robot, and wrote Artificial Cognitive Systems: A Primer. His later work includes culturally sensitive social robotics for Africa, and he is co-chair emeritus of the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society Technical Committee for Cognitive Robotics.

School, engineering, and software
He attends St. Luke's National School in Cork until 1969 and Midleton College in Cork until 1975. He earns engineering degrees at Trinity College Dublin in 1979, joins Westinghouse Electric as a software engineer, and completes a computer-science PhD at Trinity in 1985.
-
1983–1995
Teaching at Trinity
He becomes a lecturer in computer science at Trinity College Dublin in 1983 and holds the post until 1995. During a leave from Trinity, he serves as a Scientific Officer at the European Commission from 1991 to 1993 on high-performance computing and software engineering.
-
1995–2002
Professor and programme officer
He becomes professor and Head of Department at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, in 1995. He joins Etisalat University College in 1998 and Science Foundation Ireland as a Senior Programme Officer in 2002.
-
2002–2010
Coordinating European robot projects
He coordinates ECVision, a European research network for cognitive computer vision systems, from 2002 to 2005, and euCognition from 2006 to 2008. As technical coordinator of the EU-funded RobotCub project from 2004 to 2010, he takes responsibility for the iCub's cognitive architecture and contributes to an open-source cognitive humanoid robot.
-
2011–2017
Research posts across Europe
He joins the Institute for Cognitive Systems at the Technical University of Munich as a senior researcher in 2011. He becomes Professor of Informatics at the University of Skövde in 2013 and joins Carnegie Mellon University Africa as a Teaching Professor in 2017.
-
2014
A primer on cognitive systems
He publishes Artificial Cognitive Systems: A Primer in 2014, bringing together work in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and cognitive robotics and surveying cognitive architectures.
-
2017–2025
Social robots for African contexts
From 2017 to 2025, he is principal investigator of subproject R01 at the University of Bremen's EASE research center. He leads Carnegie Mellon University Africa's CSSR4Africa project from 2023 to 2025; its team builds social-robot behaviors around local norms in Rwanda and South Africa.
