Carlos Busso

Also known as Carlos A. Busso

Carlos Busso is a professor at Carnegie Mellon's Language Technologies Institute whose research focuses on human-centered multimodal machine intelligence for speech-based interfaces. He earned electrical-engineering degrees in Chile and a PhD at USC, where he began affective-computing research on speech and facial analysis in 2003. He coauthored a 2004 ICMI paper on emotion recognition from facial expressions, speech, and multimodal information, and the 2008 IEMOCAP paper on an interactive emotional dyadic motion-capture database. At UT Dallas, he established the Multimodal Signal Processing Lab in 2009, received the ICMI Ten-Year Technical Impact Award in 2014, and served as general chair of ACII 2017. IEEE named him a Fellow in 2023, and ISCA named him a Fellow in March 2024; since 2025, he directs the Multimodal Speech Processing Lab at Carnegie Mellon.

Timeline

  1. 2000–2008

    Electrical engineering degrees

He earns electrical-engineering degrees at the University of Chile in 2000 and 2003, then completes a PhD at the University of Southern California in 2008.

  2. 2003–2004

    Affective research at USC

At USC, he begins affective-computing research focused on speech and facial analysis in 2003. He coauthors an ICMI paper on emotion recognition from facial expressions, speech, and multimodal information in 2004.

  3. 2008–2009

    IEMOCAP and USC postdoc

At USC's Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory, he works as a postdoctoral researcher in multimodal signal processing from 2008 to 2009. He and colleagues publish IEMOCAP, an interactive emotional dyadic motion-capture database, in 2008.

  4. 2009–2024

    Faculty at UT Dallas

He joins UT Dallas as an assistant professor in 2009 and establishes the Multimodal Signal Processing Lab there in August 2009. In November 2014, he receives the ICMI Ten-Year Technical Impact Award and becomes an associate professor in 2015. In 2017, he serves as general chair of ACII and becomes a full professor in 2020, a role he holds through 2024.

  5. 2023–2024

    IEEE and ISCA fellowships

IEEE elevates him to Fellow in 2023 for contributions to speech and multimodal affective signal processing and their technology applications. In March 2024, ISCA elevates him to Fellow for contributions to speech and multimodal affective signal processing and their technology applications.

  6. Since 2025

    Professor at Carnegie Mellon

In January 2025, the MSP Lab moves to Carnegie Mellon, where he is a professor at the Language Technologies Institute and directs the group. Its research focuses on human-centered multimodal machine intelligence and its applications in speech-based interfaces.
