John Hansen

Also known as John H. L. Hansen, John H.L. Hansen

John Hansen researches speech recognition for stressed and noisy speech, using machine-learning concepts. He earned electrical engineering degrees at Rutgers and Georgia Tech, began his academic career at Duke in 1988, moved to Colorado in 1999, and joined UT Dallas in 2005 to establish the Center for Robust Speech Systems. His 1995 study analyzed speech under stress and noise, and his 2025 child speech recognition study discussed DNN-HMM, transformer, and discrete speech-unit systems. ISCA named him a Fellow in 2010 and selected him for its Medal for Scientific Achievement in 2026. As of October 2026, he is associate dean for research, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Distinguished University Chair in Telecommunications Engineering at UT Dallas.

Timeline

  1. 1982–1988

    Engineering degrees

He earns a B.S.E.E. at Rutgers in 1982 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech in 1983 and 1988.

  2. 1988–1999

    Robust Speech Processing Laboratory

He joins Duke’s engineering faculty and establishes the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory in 1988. In 1995, he publishes an ISCA Archive paper on speech under stress and noise.

  3. 1999–2005

    Joining UT Dallas

He moves to the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1999, then joins UT Dallas as head of its electrical engineering department in 2005 and establishes the Center for Robust Speech Systems. His research interests include speech and language processing with machine-learning concepts.

  4. 2010

    An ISCA Fellowship

ISCA names him a Fellow in 2010 for his research on speech signals under adverse conditions.

  5. 2025

    Child speech recognition

In 2025, he co-authors a child automatic speech recognition study published in the International Journal of Human - Computer Studies. The study presents DNN-HMM, end-to-end transformer, and discrete speech-unit systems.
