Arnon Avron

Also known as ארנון אברון

Arnon Avron is an Israeli mathematician whose work on hypersequents connects mathematical logic to automated reasoning and artificial intelligence. He studied mathematics at Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earned a doctorate in 1985, and entered computer science through a visit to Edinburgh. His work spans proof systems and frameworks for formal set theory, including research on computational set foundations in 2012 and 2018. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Tel Aviv University's School of Computer Science, with 2026 work on continuity theory in formal predicative set theory.

Timeline

  1. 1952–1985

    Mathematics and doctoral work

Born in Tel Aviv in 1952, he studies mathematics at Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, then completes a Ph.D. at Tel Aviv University in 1985.

  2. 1986–1988

    Research in Edinburgh

Between 1986 and 1988, he visits the University of Edinburgh's Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science, where he begins his association with computer science.

  3. 1988–1999

    Professor and department chair

In 1988, he joins Tel Aviv University's Department of Computer Science, chairs the School from 1996 to 1998, and becomes a full professor in 1999.

  4. 1991

    Hypersequents for AI reasoning

In 1991, he publishes “Hypersequents, logical consequence and intermediate logics for concurrency” and connects hypersequents, a generalization of the sequent calculus, with automated reasoning in artificial intelligence.

  5. 1992

    Formal systems on a machine

In 1992, he coauthors a Journal of Automated Reasoning paper on using typed lambda calculus to implement formal systems on a machine.

  6. 2012–2018

    Frameworks for formal set theory

In 2012, he presents a unified framework for formalizing set theories of different strengths with static checks for set terms. In 2018, he and Liron Cohen show that a minimal computational set theory can support scientifically applicable mathematics.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor at Tel Aviv

As of October 2026, he is a professor at the School of Computer Science at Tel Aviv University. His 2026 paper with Nissan Levi develops continuity theory in a formal predicative set theory.
