Robin Milner
Robin Milner was a computer scientist who developed an interest in artificial intelligence at City University and went on to build LCF for computer-assisted reasoning. He won scholarships to Eton and King's College, Cambridge, then developed ML for LCF and studied concurrent systems through CCS and the pi-calculus. His work on LCF, ML and CCS earned the 1991 ACM Turing Award; he later headed Cambridge's Computer Laboratory and wrote about bigraphs as models for interacting agents. He died in 2010.

Timeline
-
1946–1952
Scholarships to Eton and King's
He wins scholarships to Eton in 1946 and King's College, Cambridge, in 1952.
-
1963–1968
An interest in AI
From 1963 to 1968, he lectures in mathematics and computing at City University, London, where he develops an interest in artificial intelligence.
-
1971–1972
LCF and machine proofs
After leaving Swansea for Stanford in 1971, he develops LCF, an influential system for computer-assisted reasoning. His 1972 manual describes LCF as a proof-checking program for a logic of computable functions.
-
1973–1986
ML, CCS and the LFCS
He joins Edinburgh in 1973, develops ML as a metalanguage for LCF, publishes CCS in 1980, and co-founds the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science in 1986. His work on concurrent computation also includes the pi-calculus.
-
1991
A Turing Award
In 1991, he receives the ACM Turing Award for his contributions to LCF, ML and CCS.
-
1995–1999
Leading Cambridge's lab
He joins Cambridge's Computer Laboratory in 1995 and serves as its head from 1996 to 1999.
-
2004
Bigraphs for interacting agents
In 2004, he publishes Axioms for bigraphical structure. His book The Space and Motion of Communicating Agents presents a structural theory based on bigraphs for systems of interacting agents.

2010
Death in 2010
He dies in 2010.
