Anne Martel
Also known as Anne L Martel
Anne Martel is a medical imaging researcher whose AI work helps personalize cancer care. She earned a physics degree at King’s College London in 1987 and completed a PhD in medical physics and bioengineering at the University of Sheffield in 1992. She co-founded digital pathology software company Pathcore in 2006, then coauthored 2021 studies on whole-slide cancer detection and self-supervised histopathology. Sunnybrook appointed her to the Tory Family Chair in Oncology in 2022; by 2025, donor support and a 2021 Canada Foundation for Innovation grant had helped her team establish an AI Platform for Precision Medicine, and the Vector Institute made her a Faculty Member in October 2025. As of October 2026, she is a University of Toronto professor and Sunnybrook senior scientist whose AI research combines medical imaging with clinical text to support personalized cancer treatment.

Timeline
-
1987–1992
Physics and medical physics
She earns a B.Sc. in physics at King’s College London in 1987 and completes a PhD in medical physics and bioengineering at the University of Sheffield in 1992.
-
2006
Co-founding Pathcore
In 2006, she co-founds Pathcore, a software company that develops workflow solutions for digital pathology.
-
2021
Whole-slide cancer detection
In 2021, she coauthors a Scientific Reports study that applies a binary cancer-detection network to whole-slide breast cancer images after neoadjuvant therapy. The study tests negative data sampling to reduce false positives.
-
2021
Self-supervised pathology training
In 2021, she coauthors a histopathology framework that pairs self-supervised pretext learning with teacher-student semi-supervised consistency training on unlabeled images.
-
2022
Tory Family Chair in Oncology
In 2022, Sunnybrook appoints her to the Tory Family Chair in Oncology, jointly shared by Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto.
-
By 2025
AI precision medicine platform
By 2025, a 2021 Canada Foundation for Innovation grant and donor support help Martel and her team establish Sunnybrook’s Artificial Intelligence Platform for Precision Medicine. The platform lets researchers train AI models on anonymized patient data.
-
October 2025
Vector Faculty Member
In October 2025, Vector makes her a Faculty Member, one of 13 former Faculty Affiliates it promotes to Faculty Member status.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and senior scientist
As of October 2026, she is Professor of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, Senior Scientist in Physical Sciences at Sunnybrook Research Institute, and Tory Family Chair in Oncology. She is a Vector Faculty Member. Her research applies AI and machine learning to medical imaging for precision cancer diagnosis and treatment, and combines digital pathology and radiology with clinical text from patient reports to support personalized cancer care.
