April Khademi
The biomedical engineer Khademi develops AI for analyzing brain MRI and cancer pathology. She earned engineering degrees at Toronto Metropolitan University and a PhD at the University of Toronto, then held medical-imaging roles at Sunnybrook, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, GE Healthcare, PathCore and the University of Guelph. She received an Early Research Award for a project to analyze MRI and clinical data for neurodegenerative disease, coauthored GAN-based diffusion-map and AI-assisted breast-cancer studies, and received TMU’s Early SRC Career Excellence Award in 2022. As of October 2026, she is an associate professor and Canada Research Chair in AI for Medical Imaging at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Timeline
-
2004–2012
Engineering degrees and a medal
She earns a BEng at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2004, a MASc there in 2006, and a PhD at the University of Toronto in 2012. She receives the Governor General’s Gold Medal in 2006.
-
2006–2014
Medical imaging industry roles
She is an R&D engineer at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 2006–2007 and at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute in 2009–2010. From 2011 to 2013, she works as an algorithm development specialist at GE Healthcare and serves as a senior scientist and innovation specialist at PathCore from 2013 to 2014.
-
2014–2017
Assistant professor at Guelph
She serves as an assistant professor in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph from 2014 to 2017.
-
2017
AI research at TMU
She joins Toronto Metropolitan University as a professor in 2017 and collaborates with clinicians at several hospitals to design AI algorithms.
-
2021
Automated MRI research
An Early Research Award covers 2021–2026 and supports an automated software tool that analyzes brain MRI with clinical data to investigate neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.
-
2022
An SRC Career Excellence Award
In 2022, she receives TMU’s Early SRC Career Excellence Award for designing and translating machine-learning image-analysis tools for clinical radiology and pathology.
-
2023–2024
AI studies of medical images
In 2023, she coauthors a paper on generating diffusion-weighted MRI scalar maps from FLAIR; it compares GAN-based image-translation models. In 2024, she coauthors a breast-cancer paper that tests AI-assisted Ki-67 assessment with 90 international pathologists.
-
As of October 2026
Canada Research Chair in AI
As of October 2026, she is an associate professor and Canada Research Chair in AI for Medical Imaging at Toronto Metropolitan University. In 2026, she presents her lab’s automated image-analysis tools at DiscoveryX. Funding announced in August 2026 supports her AI project to assess risk and guide treatment for HER2-/HR+ breast cancer.
