Researcher

Hans J. Briegel

Also known as Hans Jürgen Briegel, Hans Briegel

Hans Briegel is a German theoretical physicist and a full professor at the University of Innsbruck, where he works on quantum information and learning agents. He and Robert Raussendorf introduced the one-way quantum computer in 2001, a new paradigm for building a quantum computer. With Gemma De las Cuevas, he proposed projective simulation in 2012, a model of a learning agent whose interaction with the environment is governed by a simulation-based projection. In 2022 an ERC Advanced Grant went to him for models of AI-driven quantum experiments. The Wittgenstein Prize, Austria's highest science prize, was awarded to him in 2023, and he received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize in 2025.
