Dieter Schmalstieg

Dieter Schmalstieg is an Austrian computer scientist who works on augmented reality, and some of that work uses machine learning. Two papers he co-authored in 2017 and 2018 use learning methods for mixed reality illumination and for 3D point clouds. He founded the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Handheld Augmented Reality in 2008 and received the IEEE Virtual Reality Technical Achievement Award in 2012. He took up a professorship at Graz University of Technology in 2004 and moved to the University of Stuttgart in fall 2023. He is Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Stuttgart.

    A Vienna doctorate

    This Austrian computer scientist receives a diploma from the Vienna University of Technology in 1993 and a doctorate there in 1997.

  2. 2004

    A Graz professorship

    In 2004 he takes up a professorship at Graz University of Technology, and from 2012 he heads its Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision.

  3. 2008

    A handheld AR laboratory

    The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Handheld Augmented Reality is founded in 2008, and he is its founder.

  4. 2012

    The IEEE VR achievement award

    He receives the IEEE Virtual Reality Technical Achievement Award in 2012 for his work on augmented reality.

  5. 2016

    A book on augmented reality

    Addison-Wesley Professional publishes the book Augmented Reality: Principles and Practice in 2016, co-written with Tobias Höllerer.

  6. 2017

    Lightprobes for mixed reality

    Learning Lightprobes for Mixed Reality Illumination appears at ISMAR in October 2017, with him as a co-author.

  7. 2018

    Segmenting 3D point clouds

    In October 2018 an ISMAR paper that he co-authors applies machine learning to semantic segmentation of geometric primitives in dense 3D point clouds.

  8. Since 2023

    Humboldt professor in Stuttgart

    Selected for the Humboldt Professorship in November 2022, he moves to the University of Stuttgart in fall 2023 as Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Visual Computing. The award is presented to him in Berlin in May 2024.
