Alonzo Kelly
Alonzo Kelly is a robotics researcher whose work helps mobile robots map, plan routes and avoid obstacles in rough terrain. He began in aerospace robotics at Spar, pursued outdoor autonomy research at Carnegie Mellon and JPL, and developed navigation and control systems for vehicles. He led a robot-simulation project, wrote a mobile-robotics textbook, and coauthored work on CMU's CHIMP disaster-response robot. As of October 2026, he is Faculty Emeritus at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.

Timeline
-
1982
Robotics at Spar Aerospace
He starts work in robotics in 1982 in Spar Aerospace's remote manipulation systems division in Canada, working on space, industrial and nuclear robotics projects.
-
1990
PhD work at CMU and JPL
In 1990, he joins the Robotics Institute's Ph.D. program and focuses on outdoor mobile robotics in the DARPA UGV program; he also spends time at JPL on stereo vision and terrain classification.
-
1997
Project Scientist at CMU
In 1997, he is a Project Scientist at the Robotics Institute, working on Ford fork-truck automation through the Robotics Engineering Consortium and HMMWV automation through the Field Robotics Center.
-
1997
An outdoor navigation system
In 1997, he and Anthony Stentz present an autonomous-navigation system for outdoor vehicles that combines perception, mapping, obstacle detection and avoidance, and goal seeking.
-
2008–2013
Research and robot simulation
By 2008, he is an associate professor at CMU's Robotics Institute and has worked on technical staff at MD Robotics and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 2013, he leads a four-year effort to improve simulation tools for designing and testing robot systems.
-
2013
A mobile robotics textbook
In 2013, he publishes Mobile Robotics: Mathematics, Models, and Methods, adapted from his graduate and undergraduate courses.
-
March 2017
The CHIMP disaster robot
In March 2017, he coauthors a paper about CMU's CHIMP, the CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform. The paper describes a humanoid robot capable of complex tasks in dangerous environments, including disaster-response settings.
-
As of October 2026
Faculty emeritus at CMU
As of October 2026, he is Faculty Emeritus in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute. His research includes methods for path following and obstacle avoidance in nonholonomic control.
