Edward Tsang
Also known as Edward P. K. Tsang, 曾炳均
Edward Tsang is a researcher whose AI work spans constraint satisfaction, optimization and computational finance. He studied business administration in Hong Kong and computer science at Essex, then wrote a book on constraint satisfaction. His EDDIE system used genetic programming to predict horse-racing results, and he co-founded Essex's Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents. He wrote AI for Finance in 2023 and is an Emeritus Professor at Essex and a Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Timeline
-
1977–1987
Finance degree and AI PhD
He earns a first degree in Business Administration, majoring in finance, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1977. He studies computer science for an MSc at Essex and earns a PhD in artificial intelligence in 1987.
-
1993
Constraint satisfaction book
In 1993, he publishes Foundations of Constraint Satisfaction with Academic Press. His research also covers constraint satisfaction and optimization.
-
1998
EDDIE beats the bookies
In 1998, he coauthors the paper EDDIE beats the bookies, which introduces a genetic programming system for predicting horse-racing results.
-
1999
Guided local search
He coauthors a 1999 paper applying guided local search to the traveling salesman problem. The method is a meta-hill-climbing strategy extended from GENET, a connectionist approach to constraint satisfaction.
-
2002–2016
Co-founding Essex's CCFEA
He co-founds the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents in 2002 and directs it from 2009 to 2016.
-
2023
AI for Finance
In 2023, he publishes AI for Finance, which introduces AI's financial uses through topics such as machine learning, trading and portfolio optimization.
-
2024
Nowcasting FX markets
He coauthors a 2024 article on nowcasting directional change in high-frequency FX markets.
-
As of October 2026
Professorships in Essex and Hong Kong
As of October 2026, he is an Emeritus Professor in Essex's School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering and a Visiting Professor in the University of Hong Kong's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
