Alessandro Cimatti
Alessandro Cimatti is a researcher in artificial intelligence and formal methods whose work spans symbolic model checking, AI planning and system verification. He began research at ITC-IRST in 1990, coauthored NuSMV in 1999, and led FBK's Embedded Systems unit from 2006 to 2020. His work on Bounded Model Checking won the TACAS 2014 Most Influential Paper award, the ETAPS 2017 Test of Time award, and CAV Awards in 2018 and 2021. He directs FBK's Digital Industry Center. In January 2025, he presented AI-MATTERS as an application setting for his center's AI work; in April 2026, he explained an ESA-backed generative-AI project for space software testing, and in August 2026, he discussed analysis of possible failures in complex systems.

1990
Research at ITC-IRST
He begins research at ITC-IRST in 1990, working in formal methods and artificial intelligence.
-
1999
NuSMV symbolic model verifier
In July 1999, he coauthors a CAV paper introducing NuSMV, a symbolic model verifier.
-
1999
SAT-based bounded model checking
In a TACAS 1999 paper, he and his coauthors apply SAT solvers to model checking and introduce Bounded Model Checking to detect system bugs.
-
2006–2020
Leading the Embedded Systems unit
From 2006 to 2020, he leads FBK's Embedded Systems research unit at its ICT Center.
-
2014
Timed game automata strategy synthesis
In 2014, he coauthors an AAAI paper that maps Simple Temporal Networks with Uncertainty to Timed Game Automata and turns the generated strategies into equivalent execution strategies.
-
2014–2021
Awards for bounded model checking
His work on Bounded Model Checking earns the TACAS 2014 Most Influential Paper award and the ETAPS 2017 Test of Time award. He also receives CAV Awards in 2018 and 2021.
-
Since 2021
Directing Digital Industry
Since January 2021, he directs FBK's Digital Industry Center. In January 2025, he describes AI-MATTERS as an application setting for the center's AI research; in April 2026, he explains an ESA-backed project that uses generative AI to test space software. In August 2026, he discusses analysis of potential failures in complex systems across space, rail, transport and manufacturing.
-
August 2026
Digital Industry director
In August 2026, he is director of FBK's Digital Industry Center and discusses his team's analysis of possible failures in complex systems across space, rail, transport and manufacturing.
