Alessandro Foi

Alessandro Foi is a signal-processing researcher whose work links statistical image denoising with neural networks. He earned a mathematics M.Sc. at the Università degli Studi di Milano in 2001, a Ph.D. at Politecnico di Milano in 2005, and a signal-processing D.Sc.Tech. at Tampere University of Technology in 2007. His work includes BM3D image denoising, a Poissonian-Gaussian noise model, NN3D nonlocal CNN denoising, and recurrent neural networks for fibre optics; he served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing from 2021 to 2023 and became an IEEE Fellow in 2022. As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Signal Processing and Director of Tampere University Imaging Research Platform, and CTO of Noiseless Imaging.
