Researcher

Luciano Serafini

Luciano Serafini is an AI researcher at Fondazione Bruno Kessler whose work connects knowledge representation with machine learning. He earned a master's degree in information science at the University of Milan and joined ITC-IRST, now FBK, as a junior researcher in 1988. He helped define Multi-Context Systems, worked on semantic matching, developed a quantum programming language, and coauthored Logic Tensor Networks, which integrate automated learning and logical reasoning. He became a EurAI Fellow in 2020 and received the AIJ Prominent Paper Award in 2026 for his Logic Tensor Networks work. At FBK, he is a Principal Researcher and heads the Data and Knowledge Management Unit.

Timeline

  1. 1988

A degree and first research role

He earns a master's degree in information science at the University of Milan in 1988. In October 1988, he joins ITC-IRST, now Fondazione Bruno Kessler, as a junior researcher.

  2. 1994

    Multilanguage logics and MCS

With Fausto Giunchiglia, he coauthors “Multilanguage Hierarchical Logics” in 1994, which organizes distinct first-order languages in a hierarchy. Early in his career, he also contributes to Multi-Context Systems, an approach to contextual reasoning.

  3. 2000–2013

    Quantum programming and semantic matching

Between 2000 and 2004, he helps develop the Q language for quantum programming and a compiler for quantum gate circuits. From 2000 to 2013, he works on semantic matching for heterogeneous schemas and proposes encoding the task as propositional satisfiability.

  4. 2016

    Logic Tensor Networks

He starts developing Logic Tensor Networks during a visit to the Research Centre for Machine Learning at City University London. In 2016, he coauthors a paper with Artur d'Avila Garcez presenting LTN as a framework that integrates logical knowledge representation with machine learning.

  5. 2020

    A EurAI Fellowship

In 2020, he becomes a EurAI Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence.

  6. August 2026

    An IJCAI keynote

In August 2026, he delivers the IJCAI keynote “Neuro-Symbolic AI and Logic Tensor Networks” on integrating neural learning and symbolic reasoning.

  7. 2026

    The AIJ Prominent Paper Award

In 2026, he receives the AIJ Prominent Paper Award for his work on Logic Tensor Networks, which integrate neural networks and logical reasoning.

  8. As of October 2026

    Head of DKM at FBK

As of October 2026, he is a Principal Researcher and head of the Data and Knowledge Management Unit within FBK's Center for Augmented Intelligence.
