Researcher

Albert Uttley

Albert Uttley worked on radar simulation and neural networks for pattern recognition. In 1942, he worked at the Telecommunications Research Establishment on radar training; he helped name the Ratio Club, which met from 1949 to 1958. At the National Physical Laboratory, he developed conditional-probability neural nets for pattern recognition and showed that Hebbian learning could classify binary sequences. At Sussex, he worked among senior researchers in AI and computational neuroscience. His 1979 book was Information Transmission in the Nervous System, and he died in 1985.

Timeline

  1. 1942

    Radar training at TRE

In March 1942, he is in Group 13, Simulators and Trainers, at the Telecommunications Research Establishment. He designs mechanical simulators for Airborne Interception radar training and H2S navigation radar.

  2. 1949–1958

    Naming the Ratio Club

From 1949 to 1958, he is a member of the Ratio Club, a British group that meets to discuss cybernetics. He suggests its name from the Latin root for computation and reasoning.

  3. 1958

    A letter about ACE

In 1958, he writes about ACE in a signed letter.

  4. 1959

    Conditional-probability neural nets

At the National Physical Laboratory, he designs conditional-probability neural nets for pattern recognition and shows that Hebbian learning can classify binary sequences. In 1959, his papers include “The Design of Conditional Probability Computers” and “Imitation of Pattern Recognition and Trial-and-Error Learning in a Conditional Probability Computer.”

  5. 1960s

    Early AI at Sussex

Sussex's Experimental Psychology group begins early AI research in the mid-1960s. Uttley is among the senior researchers in AI and computational neuroscience drawn to this work.

  6. 1979

    A book on neural information

He publishes Information Transmission in the Nervous System in 1979.

  7. 1985

    Death in Bexhill

    He dies in 1985.
