Timeline

  1. 2019–2021

A Cambridge BA and Oxford MSc

He earns a Class I BA in engineering at the University of Cambridge in 2019 and an MSc in computer science at the University of Oxford with distinction in 2021.

  2. June 2019–October 2022

    Research at Toronto and FAIR

He works as a research assistant at the University of Toronto from June 2019 to June 2020, then joins FAIR France as a research scientist intern from July 2022 to October 2022.

  3. 2023

    Mistral 7B

In 2023, he coauthors Mistral 7B, a 7-billion-parameter language model with grouped-query attention for faster inference and sliding-window attention for long sequences.

  4. 2024

    Mixtral and Mathstral

In 2024, he coauthors Mixtral of Experts, a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 47 billion parameters and 13 billion active at inference, and contributes mid- and post-training data to Mathstral.

  5. October 2024–December 2024

    A PhD in formal mathematics

He studies how to learn abstract mathematical reasoning with language models during his Cambridge PhD; he passes his thesis examination without corrections in October 2024. By December 2024, he works full-time at Mistral AI on reasoning.

  6. 2025–2026

    Magistral and LeanHammer

In 2025, he works on large-scale reinforcement learning for Magistral, Mistral's first reasoning model. His paper presents LeanPremise and LeanHammer, combining neural premise selection with proof reconstruction for Lean; it receives a revision in February 2026. In August 2026, he coauthors a study that compares soft guidance with chain-of-thought prompting on math problems, and works on Leanstral 1.0 and 1.5 as formal agentic models.

  7. As of October 2026

    Leading Mistral's reasoning team

He leads Mistral AI's reasoning team and has worked as a research scientist there since June 2023; the team works on the science and infrastructure of reasoning.
