Yuling Gu
Yuling Gu is an AI researcher whose work spans open language models, reproducible evaluation, and tests of machine reasoning. She graduated from New York University in 2020 with a double major in Computer Science and Language and Mind, then completed an M.S. at the University of Washington before joining Ai2’s Aristo team. Her work includes DREAM, Digital Socrates, the OLMES evaluation standard, and Olmo 3. She is a PhD student at NYU’s Center for Data Science, a role she began in September 2025. In 2026, she coauthored SimpleToM, an ICLR benchmark that tests whether language models apply mental-state reasoning to predict and judge behavior.

2020–2022
Degrees at NYU and Washington
She graduates from New York University in 2020 after double-majoring in Computer Science and Language and Mind. She completes an M.S. at the University of Washington before joining Ai2.
-
April 2022–August 2025
Predoctoral researcher on Ai2’s Aristo team
She joins Ai2’s Aristo team as a Predoctoral Young Investigator in April 2022 and holds the role through August 2025.
-
2022
DREAM for situational questions
In 2022, she coauthors DREAM, which generates scene elaborations and supplies them as context for answering situational questions.
-
2024
Digital Socrates explanation critiques
In August 2024, she introduces Digital Socrates, an open-source critique model that automatically characterizes how large language models explain their answers.
-
2024–2025
The OLMES evaluation standard
In 2024, she coauthors OLMES, an open standard for reproducible language-model evaluations. Findings of NAACL publishes the work in 2025.
-
2025
Olmo 3 open models
She coauthors the Olmo 3 paper in 2025, which introduces a family of fully open 7B and 32B language models.
-
2026
SimpleToM at ICLR
In 2026, she coauthors SimpleToM, an ICLR benchmark that tests whether models apply inferred mental states to predict behavior and judge actions.
