Yonina Eldar
Yonina Eldar is an electrical engineer whose work links signal processing, sub-Nyquist sampling and artificial intelligence. Born in Toronto, she moved to Israel in 1979, earned physics and electrical engineering degrees at Tel Aviv University, and completed an MIT PhD in 2002. At the Technion, she became a full professor in 2010; her modulated wideband converter prototype sampled multiband transmissions below Nyquist and was presented at ICASSP in 2010; she received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award in 2013. She joined Weizmann in March 2019 as the first incumbent of the Dorothy and Patrick Gorman Professorial Chair; her 2021 article explained algorithm unrolling for deep learning, and she received the 2025 Israel Prize in Engineering Research and Engineering Sciences. She is a Research Professor and holder of the Aoun Chair at Northeastern.

Timeline
-
1979–2002
Physics and engineering degrees
Born in Toronto, she moves to Israel in 1979. She earns a B.Sc. in physics in 1995 and a B.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1996 at Tel Aviv University, then completes a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT in 2002.
-
2002–2010
Professor at the Technion
She joins the Technion's Department of Electrical Engineering in 2002 and becomes a full professor in 2010.
-
2010
A modulated wideband converter
The modulated wideband converter is presented at ICASSP's Show & Tell in 2010. The prototype samples multiple narrowband transmissions at a rate proportional to their bandwidth occupation, without prior knowledge of carrier positions.
-
2013
A signal processing award
She receives the 2013 IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award.
-
March 2019
Joining the Weizmann faculty
In March 2019, she joins the Weizmann faculty as the first incumbent of the Dorothy and Patrick Gorman Professorial Chair.
-
March 2021
Algorithm unrolling for deep learning
In March 2021, she coauthors “Algorithm Unrolling: Interpretable, Efficient Deep Learning for Signal and Image Processing.” The method converts an iterative algorithm into a neural network by designing each layer to resemble one iteration.
-
2025
Israel Prize in engineering
She receives the 2025 Israel Prize in Engineering Research and Engineering Sciences.
-
As of October 2026
Research Professor at Northeastern
In August 2025, she joins Northeastern's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a Professor and Joseph E. Aoun Chair. She is a Research Professor there, and her research focuses on resource-aware sensing and AI systems.
