Researcher

Gerhard Brewka

Gerhard Brewka is a German AI researcher whose work develops formal methods for knowledge representation and argumentation. He studied computer science in Bonn and Hamburg, worked in AI in Sankt Augustin and Berkeley, and held professorships in Vienna and Leipzig. His papers extended multi-context reasoning and abstract dialectical frameworks, with later work on reactive reasoning and Answer Set Programming. He served as ECCAI president and an IJCAI trustee and conference chair, received the 2026 Pavlos Peppas Distinguished Service Award, and as of October 2026 is a retired professor at Leipzig University.

Timeline

  1. 1955–1996

    Early research and professorships

Born in Regensburg in 1955, he earns a computer science diploma from Bonn in 1984 and a PhD from Hamburg in 1989. He joins Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung's AI group in Sankt Augustin in 1984 and visits Berkeley's International Computer Science Institute as a researcher in 1991–1992. He becomes a full professor at the Technical University of Vienna in 1995 and takes Leipzig's Intelligent Systems chair in 1996.

  2. 1998–2008

    Leading knowledge representation training

He heads Leipzig University's doctoral programme in knowledge representation from 1998 to 2008.

  3. 2002

    An ECCAI fellowship

He becomes an ECCAI Fellow in 2002 and joins ECCAI's board in 2006.

  4. 2007

    A multi-context reasoning paper

With Thomas Eiter, he publishes “Equilibria in Heterogeneous Nonmonotonic Multi-Context Systems” at AAAI in 2007. The paper proposes a framework that combines monotonic and non-monotonic logics across contexts.

  5. 2008

    President of ECCAI

At ECAI 2008, he is elected president of ECCAI.

  6. 2013–2019

    Argumentation and reactive reasoning

In 2013, he and collaborators publish “Abstract Dialectical Frameworks Revisited,” extending argumentation semantics and adding an Answer Set Programming implementation. He serves as an IJCAI trustee from 2013 to 2018 and chairs IJCAI-16 in 2016. Their 2016 paper introduces reactive multi-context systems for data streams, and their 2019 work translates ADFs and GRAPPA into Answer Set Programming.

  7. 2026

    A KR service award

KR Inc. awards him the Pavlos Peppas Distinguished Service Award in 2026 for sustained service to the knowledge representation community.

  8. As of October 2026

    A retired professor at Leipzig

As of October 2026, he is a retired professor in Leipzig University's Institute of Computer Science.
