Vito Di Gesù

Also known as Vito Di Gesú

Vito Di Gesù was an Italian computer scientist whose work linked pattern recognition, computer vision and bioinformatics. He coauthored a minimum-spanning-forest paper in 1983, led GIRPR from 1990 to 1994, and became an IAPR Fellow in 1994 for work on fusion, machine-vision architectures and segmentation. He co-edited Shape, Contour and Grouping in Computer Vision in 1999 and coauthored GenClust, a genetic algorithm for gene-expression clustering, in 2005. At the University of Palermo, he was a full professor of information-processing systems and coauthored a 2009 Genomics study of nucleosome positions; he died at 64 in 2009, and the university scheduled a memorial for March 2010. GIRPR adopted the CVPL name in 2018.

Timeline

  1. 1983

    A minimum spanning forest paper

In 1983, he coauthors with B. Sacco “Some statistical properties of the minimum spanning forest.”

  2. 1990–1994

    President of GIRPR

From 1990 to 1994, he serves as president of GIRPR.

  3. 1994

    An IAPR Fellowship

In 1994, the IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions to fusion methodologies, architectures for machine vision and segmentation techniques, and for service to the association.

  4. 1999

    Editing a computer vision book

In 1999, he co-edits Shape, Contour and Grouping in Computer Vision with David A. Forsyth, Joseph L. Mundy and Roberto Cipolla.

  5. 2005

    GenClust for gene expression

In 2005, he coauthors GenClust with Raffaele Giancarlo, Giosuè Lo Bosco, Alessandra Raimondi and Davide Scaturro; the genetic algorithm clusters gene-expression data.

  6. 2009

    A genomic study in Palermo

In 2009, he coauthors “A Multi-Layer Method to Study Genome-Scale Positions of Nucleosomes” with Giosuè Lo Bosco, Luca Pinello, G. C. Yuan and Davide Corona; Genomics publishes the study. He is a full professor of information-processing systems in the University of Palermo’s Faculty of Sciences.

  7. 2009–2010

    Death and a Palermo memorial

He dies at 64 in 2009. In March 2010, the University of Palermo schedules a scientific memorial for the first anniversary of his death.

  8. 2018

    GIRPR adopts the CVPL name

In January 2018, the association changes its name to CVPL after an extraordinary assembly in Modena revises its statute.
