Joseph Mundy
Also known as J. L. Mundy, Joseph L. Mundy
Joseph Mundy is a computer vision researcher whose work spans image understanding, geometric invariants, 3D modeling and image recognition. He earned engineering degrees at Rensselaer, led computer-vision research at General Electric and joined Brown as a research professor. His 1993 Marr Prize paper derives projective invariants for 3D recognition, while later projects use visual SLAM, neural networks and satellite imagery. He co-founded Vision Systems Inc. in 2011 and is its president as of October 2026.

Timeline
-
1963–1969
Engineering degrees at Rensselaer
He earns a B.E.E. in 1963, an M.Eng. in 1966 and a Ph.D. in 1969 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
-
1970s–2002
A GE computer-vision group
In the early 1970s, he leads a GE group in image understanding and computer vision; the group develops an early computer-vision system for industrial inspection.
-
1988
A Coolidge Fellowship at Oxford
In 1988, he receives GE’s Coolidge Fellowship and uses it for an Oxford sabbatical, where he studies invariant theory for computer vision with Michael Brady and Andrew Zisserman.
-
1993
A Marr Prize for projective structure
In 1993, his paper with Charles Rothwell, David Forsyth and Andrew Zisserman, *Extracting Projective Structure from Single Perspective Views of 3D Point Sets*, wins the Marr Prize. It derives projective invariants for structured 3D point sets used in object recognition.
-
2002
Professor at Brown
In 2002, he joins Brown’s School of Engineering as a research professor, where he works on video and image analysis, change detection and 3D volumetric modeling.
-
2011
Co-founding Vision Systems
In 2011, he co-founds Vision Systems Inc. and serves as its president and CEO. He manages the DARPA Tailwind and Visual Media Reasoning projects for aerial-video processing and scene analysis.
-
2017–2025
Aerial and satellite vision systems
In 2017, he coauthors the GLAM feature-based visual SLAM system for near-real-time aerial mapping, plus a face-recognition study that augments deep-neural-network training with synthetic pose and lighting examples. In April 2025, he coauthors a physics-driven image simulator that creates realistic scenes from commercial satellite imagery.
-
As of October 2026
President of Vision Systems
As of October 2026, he is president of Vision Systems Inc. The company offers computer-vision solutions for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
