Vitomir Štruc
Also known as Vitomir Struc
Vitomir Štruc is an AI researcher whose work connects biometrics, face recognition and computer vision. He earned electrical engineering degrees at the University of Ljubljana, led its BAMBI face-recognition project and joined its faculty. His AI work includes deepfake detection: he leads DeepFake DAD and collaborated on M-Task-SS, a model for detecting image tampering. He received the University of Ljubljana’s Golden Plaque in 2025 and became an IAPR Fellow in 2026. As of October 2026, he is a full professor at the university’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and a researcher at its Laboratory for Machine Intelligence.

Timeline
-
2005–2010
An electrical engineering doctorate
He earns a BSc in electrical engineering at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering in 2005 and a PhD there in 2010.
-
2010–2013
Leading the BAMBI project
After his 2010 PhD, he joins Alpineon as a software developer focused on biometric technology. In 2011, he leads the University of Ljubljana’s BAMBI postdoctoral project on face recognition in ambient-intelligence settings; the project ends in August 2013, and he takes a research position at the faculty.
-
2013–2017
Assistant professor in Ljubljana
He serves as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, from 2013 to 2017. In summer 2015, he is a guest assistant professor in the University of Notre Dame’s CSE department.
-
2017–2025
Leading biometric systems research
From 2017 to 2022, he is an associate professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He leads the Metrology and Biometric Systems research programme from 2018 to 2024, with research spanning artificial intelligence, biometrics, face recognition, computer vision and deep learning. He serves as Vice President for Technical Activities of the IEEE Biometrics Council during the 2024–2025 term.
-
2023–2026
DeepFake DAD and M-Task-SS
From 2023 to 2026, he leads DeepFake DAD, a research project on deepfake detection. In 2025, he collaborates on M-Task-SS, a model that detects image tampering and identifies altered facial areas using conventional and transformer-based neural networks.
-
2025
A Golden Plaque and TIFS editorship
The University of Ljubljana awards him its Golden Plaque in 2025. In March 2025, he becomes Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. He is a full professor and AI researcher who leads the Metrology and Biometric Systems programme.
-
2026
An IAPR Fellowship
In 2026, IAPR elects him a Fellow for contributions to biometrics and service through its Technical Committees and conferences.
-
Since 2022
Professor in the Machine Intelligence Lab
Since 2022, he is a Full Professor at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and a researcher at its Laboratory for Machine Intelligence. He leads Opti-AI, a 2025–2027 project on AI-based spatial planning for power-system infrastructure.
