Visvanathan Ramesh

Also known as V. Ramesh

Visvanathan Ramesh is a computer vision researcher whose path runs from industrial real-time vision at Siemens to bio-inspired cognitive vision and continual learning at Goethe University Frankfurt. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1994 and led the Real-time Vision and Modeling department at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton by 2003. A paper on real-time tracking with mean shift, which he coauthored, won the CVPR best paper award in 2000 and the Longuet-Higgins Prize in 2010, and he and his Siemens team won the Siemens Inventor of the Year award in 2008. By 2011 he was a professor working with Goethe University and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, and in 2020 he coauthored a study that links continual learning, active learning and open set recognition. As of October 2026, he is Executive Director of the Institute of Computer Science at Goethe University Frankfurt.

Timeline

  1. 1994

    Doctorate at Washington

He completes a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1994, with the dissertation "Performance Characterization of Image Understanding Algorithms".

  2. 2000

    Mean shift tracking at CVPR

In 2000, he coauthors "Real-Time Tracking of Non-Rigid Objects using Mean Shift", a paper on real-time tracking that receives the CVPR best paper award.

  3. By 2003

    Real-time vision at Siemens

By 2003, he heads the Real-time Vision and Modeling department at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, New Jersey. His work there centers on statistical methods for real-time video analysis, including object detection, tracking, and action recognition.

  4. 2008

    Siemens Inventor of the Year

He and his team receive the Siemens Inventor of the Year award in 2008 for outstanding contributions in real-time vision and modelling.

  5. 2010

    The Longuet-Higgins Prize

The IEEE Longuet-Higgins Prize for foundational contributions in computer vision goes to him in 2010, for the mean shift tracking paper he coauthored with D. Comaniciu and P. Meer.

  6. By 2011

    Frankfurt Vision Initiative

By June 2011, he is a professor working with Goethe University and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies on systems engineering for vision and cognition. The Frankfurt Vision Initiative, part of the Bernstein Network of Computational Neuroscience, develops a bio-inspired cognitive vision system.

  7. 2020

    Continual learning in open worlds

In 2020, he coauthors "A Wholistic View of Continual Learning with Deep Neural Networks" with Martin Mundt, Yongwon Hong and Iuliia Pliushch. The paper bridges continual learning, active learning and open set recognition in deep neural networks.

  8. As of October 2026

Director of Frankfurt's computer science institute

In November 2023, a call for a tenure-track professorship names him Director of the Institute of Computer Science at Goethe University Frankfurt. As of October 2026, he is its Executive Director and the W3 professor for Software Engineering with emphasis on Bio-inspired Vision, with the research area Systems Engineering for Vision and Cognition.
