Dorin Comaniciu

Dorin Comaniciu is a computer vision researcher whose work connects machine intelligence with medical imaging and healthcare AI. He studied engineering in Romania and completed doctorates at Bucharest Polytechnic and Rutgers. His Mean Shift work supported image analysis and tracking, and a 2000 CVPR paper received the Best Paper Award; he later received the IEEE Longuet-Higgins Prize for computer vision. At Siemens, he led an imaging research department and described a Digital Twin approach to cardiovascular care, then became an ACM Fellow in 2017 and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine in 2019 and the National Academy of Engineering in 2025. As of October 2026, he is Siemens Healthineers' Senior Vice President for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation.

Timeline

  1. 1988–2000

    An engineering education

He studied mathematics and physics at Radu Negru National College and earned an electronics and telecommunications degree at Bucharest Polytechnic. He later completed doctorates in engineering there and in electrical and computer engineering at Rutgers.

  2. 1997–2002

    A method for visual tracking

His early computer-vision work used Mean Shift for image analysis and tracking. Papers applied the method to color-image segmentation and real-time tracking of non-rigid objects; the 2000 CVPR paper received the conference's Best Paper Award.

  3. 2004–2009

    Leading an imaging group

He led Siemens' Integrated Data Systems Department from 2004 to 2009. The department quadrupled in size under his leadership.

  4. 2010

    A computer vision prize

He received the IEEE Longuet-Higgins Prize for fundamental contributions to computer vision.

  5. 2017

    A computing fellowship

The Association for Computing Machinery elected him a Fellow.

  6. 2018

    A twin for heart care

At Siemens Healthineers' 2018 Executive Summit, he showed how a Digital Twin could use patient data from multiple sources to improve cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment.

  7. 2019–2025

    Two national academies

He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2019 and to the National Academy of Engineering's Class of 2025.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading healthcare AI

He serves as Senior Vice President for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation at Siemens Healthineers. His work in machine intelligence and computational imaging supports clinical products for diagnostic imaging, image-guided therapy, and precision medicine.
