Researcher

Thomas Schöps

Thomas Schöps is a computer vision researcher whose work spans monocular SLAM, mobile 3D mapping and multi-view stereo. He coauthored LSD-SLAM in 2014 and received a Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship in 2015. At ETH Zurich, he developed tablet software that digitized the main building in 10 minutes, coauthored a multi-view stereo benchmark in 2017, and completed a computer vision PhD in 2020. He founded ScannedReality in 2022, where the team develops 3D reconstruction algorithms for ScannedReality Studio, a volumetric-video solution. LSD-SLAM received the 2024 Koenderink Prize; as of October 2026, he is managing director of ScannedReality GmbH.

Timeline

  1. 2014

    LSD-SLAM at ECCV

In 2014, he coauthors LSD-SLAM for ECCV, a direct monocular system that reconstructs the 3D environment in real time as a pose graph of keyframes with semi-dense depth maps.

  2. 2015

    Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship

He receives the 2015 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship through ETH Zurich's Department of Computer Science.

  3. 2016

    Mapping the ETH main building

As a doctoral student at ETH Zurich's Institute for Visual Computing, he develops tablet software with Marc Pollefeys's group that digitizes the main building as a 3D model in 10 minutes.

  4. 2017

    A multi-view stereo benchmark

He coauthors a 2017 CVPR paper that introduces a multi-view stereo benchmark using high-resolution DSLR images and synchronized stereo videos from indoor and outdoor scenes.

  5. 2020

    A computer vision PhD

In 2020, he earns a computer vision PhD at ETH Zurich's Computer Vision and Geometry Group.

  6. 2022

    Founding ScannedReality

He founds ScannedReality in 2022. The company develops 3D reconstruction algorithms and markets them through ScannedReality Studio, its volumetric-video solution.

  7. 2024

    Koenderink Prize for LSD-SLAM

In 2024, ECCV gives the Koenderink Prize to LSD-SLAM and its authors, including Jakob Engel, Thomas Schöps and Daniel Cremers.

  8. As of October 2026

    Managing director at ScannedReality

As of October 2026, he is managing director of ScannedReality GmbH.
