Daniel Cremers
Daniel Cremers is a computer vision and artificial intelligence researcher whose work helps machines interpret images and video. He studied physics and mathematics in Heidelberg, earned a computer science doctorate in Mannheim, and moved through research posts in Los Angeles and Princeton before professorships in Bonn and Munich. His work includes LSD-SLAM, a real-time monocular mapping method, and SIMULACRON, a project to infer physical simulations from video. He received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, joined the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and serves as president of the European Computer Vision Association and an ELLIS Unit Director and Fellow.

Timeline
-
1994–2002
A foundation in physics
He earns bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physics at Heidelberg in 1994 and a master's in theoretical physics there in 1997, then completes a computer science PhD at Mannheim in 2002.
-
2002–2009
Early research in vision
After a UCLA postdoctoral appointment, he spends a year at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton and serves as an associate professor at Bonn from 2005 to 2009.
-
Since 2009
A chair in Munich
Since 2009, he has held TUM's Chair of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.
-
2014–2024
Mapping with one camera
With Jakob Engel and Thomas Schöps, he develops LSD-SLAM, a direct monocular SLAM method that tracks and maps image intensities in real time. The 2014 ECCV paper receives the Koenderink Test of Time Award in 2024.
-
2015
An award for image analysis
In 2015, the German Research Foundation awards him the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for research on mathematical image processing and pattern recognition that aims to help machines interpret visual data.
-
2019
Joining a scientific academy
He joins the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities for his contributions to computer vision.
-
2020
Modeling the physics of video
His ERC Advanced Grant SIMULACRON aims to infer physical simulations of the observed world from videos.
-
As of October 2026
Leading computer vision networks
Since 2023, he has served as president of the European Computer Vision Association. At ELLIS Munich, he is a Unit Director and Fellow.
