Subhash Suri

Subhash Suri is a computer scientist whose algorithms research spans computational geometry, networks and game theory, and reaches AI through combinatorial auctions for multiagent systems. He studied at IIT Roorkee, earned a doctorate at Johns Hopkins in 1987 under Joseph O'Rourke, and worked at Bellcore and Washington University before joining UC Santa Barbara in 2000. With Tuomas Sandholm, he published an AAAI 2000 paper on optimal winner determination in combinatorial auctions, and building on his auction research he co-founded the e-sourcing company CombineNet. He became an ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2007 and a Fellow of the IEEE in 2009, of the ACM in 2010 and of the AAAS in 2011, and he chaired UCSB's computer science department from 2011 to 2014. He is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UCSB, where he directs the Applied Algorithms Lab and the Center for Geometric Computing.

Timeline

  1. 1981–1987

Roorkee and a Johns Hopkins PhD

He earns a B.S. in electronics and communication at IIT Roorkee in 1981 and an M.S. in computer science at Johns Hopkins in 1984. In 1987, he completes his Ph.D. in computer science at Johns Hopkins under Joseph O'Rourke.

  2. 1987–2000

    Bellcore and Washington University

He works as a research scientist at Bellcore from 1987 to 1994. In 1994, he becomes an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis, where he stays until 2000.

  3. 2000

    Winner determination at AAAI

In 2000, he and Tuomas Sandholm publish "Improved Algorithms for Optimal Winner Determination in Combinatorial Auctions and Generalizations" at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The paper presents a search algorithm for optimal, anytime winner determination in combinatorial auctions, which allocate resources and tasks among agents in multiagent systems.

  4. 2000

    Professor at UC Santa Barbara

He moves from Washington University in St. Louis to a full professorship at UC Santa Barbara in 2000. In 2006–07, he is a visiting professor at ETH Zurich.

  5. 2007–2011

    ACM, IEEE and AAAS honours

He is named an ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2007 and an IEEE Fellow in 2009 for contributions to algorithmic foundations in geometry, networking and economics. He becomes an ACM Fellow in 2010 and an AAAS Fellow in 2011 for contributions to computational geometry, networks and computational economics.

  6. 2011–2014

    Chair of UCSB computer science

From 2011 to 2014, he chairs the computer science department at UC Santa Barbara.

  7. 2019

    Alumnus award and CombineNet

In 2019, he is one of two recipients of the Indian Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumnus Award in the category of Academic Excellence. He is also a co-founder of CombineNet, an e-sourcing company built on his combinatorial auctions research, whose software drives the procurement of goods and services at several Fortune 500 companies.

  8. As of October 2026

    Distinguished Professor at UCSB

He is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UC Santa Barbara, where he directs the Applied Algorithms Lab and the Center for Geometric Computing. Research from his group has spanned areas that include AI.
