Jonathan Turner
Jonathan Turner is a computer scientist whose scalable packet-switching work connects to AI through the network infrastructure used to move data among computing systems. He earned degrees at Washington University, Oberlin and Northwestern, joined WashU as a computer science professor in 1983, and published a 1986 paper on an integrated network for data, video and voice. At WashU, he co-founded the Applied Research Laboratory, directed it through 2012 and co-founded Growth Networks; he became an ACM Fellow in 2001 and a National Academy of Engineering member in 2007. As of October 2026, he is a Senior Professor at WashU and continues selected research projects.
Timeline
-
1977–1982
WashU, Oberlin and Northwestern degrees
He earns B.S. degrees in computer science and electrical engineering at Washington University and a B.A. from Oberlin College in 1977. At Northwestern, he earns an M.S. in computer science in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1982.
-
1981–1983
Bell Labs packet switching
From 1981 to 1983, he serves as principal system architect for Bell Labs' Fast Packet Switching project.
-
1983–1997
A WashU professorship
He joins Washington University as an assistant professor of computer science in 1983, becomes a full professor by 1990, and chairs the Computer Science department from 1992 to 1997.
-
1986
New Directions in Communications
In 1986, he publishes “New Directions in Communications,” proposing an integrated network architecture for data, video and voice. His scalable packet-switch designs connect to AI at the network-infrastructure layer that moves data between computing systems.
-
1988–2012
The Applied Research Laboratory
In 1988, he founds the Advanced Networking Group and co-founds the Applied Research Laboratory at Washington University with Jerome R. Cox and Guru Parulkar; he directs the lab through 2012. Their Growth Networks startup develops high-performance switching components for Internet routers, and Cisco Systems acquires it in 2000.
-
2001
An ACM Fellowship
In 2001, ACM names him a Fellow for his design of scalable packet switches and contributions to an integrated packet network for data, voice and video.
-
2007
National Academy membership
He is elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2007 for contributions to the design and analysis of high-performance communication networks.
-
As of October 2026
Senior professor at WashU
As of October 2026, he is a Senior Professor in Washington University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering and continues selected research projects.
