Researcher

Salem Benferhat

Salem Benferhat is a computer scientist and professor at the University of Artois whose work develops reasoning methods for uncertain and inconsistent knowledge. He earned a PhD under Henri Prade and worked at CNRS's IRIT in Toulouse. His papers explored prioritized inference, possibilistic graphs and bipolar representations; later work examined repairs to inconsistent knowledge bases and anomaly detection in wastewater videos. He received a SECRYPT Best Student Paper Award in 2008 and became a EurAI Fellow in 2015. As of October 2026, he is a professor at CRIL and the lab's scientific lead for STARWARS, an AI project on stormwater and wastewater data.

Timeline

  1. 1993

    Prioritized syntax-based entailment

In 1993, he coauthors Inconsistency Management and Prioritized Syntax-Based Entailment at IJCAI with Claudette Cayrol, Didier Dubois, Jérôme Lang and Henri Prade. The paper studies non-monotonic inference from priority-based handling of inconsistent sets of classical formulas, including a lexicographic ordering of maximal consistent subsets.

  2. 1994–2000

    Doctorate and habilitation

He earns a PhD at Université Paul Sabatier–Toulouse III in 1994 under Henri Prade for a dissertation on non-monotonic reasoning and inconsistency in possibilistic logic. In 2000, he earns the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches at Université Paul Sabatier.

  3. 1994–2003

    CNRS research in Toulouse

From 1994 to 2003, he works as a CNRS researcher at IRIT in Toulouse.

  4. 1999

    Possibilistic graphs and logic bases

In 1999, he coauthors Possibilistic Logic Bases and Possibilistic Graphs at UAI with Didier Dubois, Laurent Garcia and Henri Prade. The paper describes bases that stratify logical formulas by certainty and graphs that represent relationships between variables.

  5. 2002

    Bipolar possibilistic representations

In 2002, he coauthors Bipolar Possibilistic Representations at UAI with Didier Dubois, Souhila Kaci and Henri Prade. The paper represents knowledge and preferences using constraints on necessity measures and guaranteed possibility functions.

  6. 2008

    A SECRYPT student-paper award

In 2008, his paper with Karim Tabia on detecting novel and anomalous behavior with Bayesian network classifiers receives SECRYPT's Best Student Paper Award.

  7. 2015

    EurAI Fellow and IJCAI repair

EurAI names him a Fellow in 2015. At IJCAI 2015, he coauthors a paper with Zied Bouraoui and Karim Tabia on selecting one preferred repair from inconsistent DL-Lite knowledge bases with prioritized assertions.

  8. 2023–2026

    Professor at CRIL and STARWARS

He is a full professor of computer science at CRIL (CNRS UMR-8188), at the University of Artois, and has held the post since February 2003. He serves as CRIL's scientific lead for STARWARS (2023–2026), a project that develops AI methods for managing heterogeneous stormwater and wastewater network data. In 2025, he coauthors a Fuzzy Sets and Systems paper on computing a productive repair for possibilistic partially ordered DL-Lite_R ontologies; in 2026, he coauthors LAVA, which uses self-attention to learn video features for wastewater-pipe anomaly detection.
