Sébastien Konieczny
Sébastien Konieczny is an AI researcher whose work applies logic to belief merging and reasoning with inconsistent information. He earned a PhD in computer science at Université de Lille 1 in 1999, joined CNRS at IRIT in 2001, and moved to CRIL in 2004. He directed the GDR IA from 2016 to 2023, became a EurAI Fellow in 2024, and served as the Hauts-de-France regional Fête de la science ambassador in 2025. As of October 2026, he leads the ANR-funded REVISE project at CRIL.
Timeline
-
1995–1999
A computer science PhD
He earns an MSc in computer science at Université de Lille 1 in 1996 and completes a PhD there in 1999.
-
1999–2001
Teaching at EUDIL and Lens
From 1999 to 2000, he works as a teaching and research assistant at EUDIL and LIFL. At IUT de Lens and CRIL, he teaches from 2000 to 2001.
-
2001–2004
A distance-based merging framework
At IRIT, Université Paul Sabatier, he joins CNRS as a research scientist in 2001. His work uses logic for AI. In 2002, he coauthors “Distance-based merging: a general framework and some complexity results” with J. Lang and Pierre Marquis; the paper sets out a general framework for distance-based belief merging and studies complexity results.
-
2004–2023
Directing the GDR IA
He moves to CRIL at Université d'Artois as a CNRS research scientist in 2004 and becomes a CNRS research director there in 2010. From 2016 to 2023, he directs the GDR IA on formal and algorithmic aspects of artificial intelligence.
-
2024
A EurAI fellowship
He is named a EurAI Fellow in 2024.
-
2024
An AI guide for readers
He coordinates the second edition of “L'intelligence artificielle. De quoi s'agit-il vraiment ?”, published by Cépadues in 2024 with GDR RADIA and Henri Prade. The book introduces artificial intelligence to general readers.
-
2025
Hauts-de-France science ambassador
He becomes the Hauts-de-France regional ambassador for Fête de la science in 2025. His public outreach covers AI, collective decision-making and truth discovery. His research addresses belief merging and inconsistency management.
-
As of October 2026
Leading the REVISE project
He is a CNRS research director at CRIL and leads REVISE, selected for ANR funding in 2026.
