Saleema Amershi

Saleema Amershi is a researcher whose work spans human-AI interaction, interactive machine learning, and multi-agent systems. Her early work modeled exploratory learning interactions, and she earned a CSE PhD at the University of Washington in 2012. She led development of human-AI design guidelines and coauthored AutoGen Studio, Magentic-One, and Magentic-UI. A 2009 paper she coauthored with Cristina Conati received the 2022 Educational Data Mining Test of Time Award. As of October 2026, she is a Partner Research Manager at Microsoft AI Frontiers and leads the Magentic Team.

Timeline

  1. 2009–2012

    Modeling exploratory learning

In 2009, while studying for a master's degree, she coauthors a paper with Cristina Conati that proposes a data-driven method for modeling exploratory learning interactions. She completes a CSE PhD at the University of Washington in 2012.

  2. 2014–2019

    Human-AI interaction guidelines

In 2014, she coauthors Power to the People: The Role of Humans in Interactive Machine Learning, which argues that users should take part at every stage of system design. In 2019, she leads development of 18 human-AI interaction guidelines presented at CHI.

  3. 2022

    A test-of-time award

Her 2009 paper with Cristina Conati receives the 2022 Educational Data Mining Test of Time Award for early work on AI-based personalized support in exploratory learning.

  4. 2023

    AutoGen Studio workflows

In December 2023, she coauthors AutoGen Studio, a point-and-click interface for defining agents and multi-agent workflows with AutoGen.

  5. 2024

    A generalist agentic system

In 2024, she coauthors Magentic-One, an open-source multi-agent system whose Orchestrator plans tasks, tracks progress, and directs specialized agents to use a browser, local files, or code.

  6. July 2025

    A human-agent interface

In July 2025, she coauthors Magentic-UI, an open-source web interface for human-agent interaction with support for web browsing, code execution, and file manipulation.

  7. August 2026

    Reinforcing social reasoning

In August 2026, she coauthors From Passive Delegates to Strategic Negotiators, a study on social reasoning in small language models with SocialRL.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading the Magentic Team

As of October 2026, she is a Partner Research Manager at Microsoft AI Frontiers and leads the Magentic Team, which builds AI agents and multi-agent platforms.
