Saburo Tsuji
Also known as 辻 三郎
Computer vision researcher Saburo Tsuji worked on world models, mobile-robot stereo imagery and active recognition with omnidirectional vision at Osaka University. Minoru Asada named him as his supervisor, and Hiroshi Ishiguro worked in Tsuji's laboratory as a graduate student at Osaka University. At Osaka and Wakayama, he held professorships, served as president of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, became an IAPR Fellow in 1996, and co-chaired ACCV'98 in Hong Kong. In March 2023, the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence published Seiji Yamada’s reminiscence of him in its journal.
Timeline
-
1982
Minoru Asada's PhD
Minoru Asada spends five years in Tsuji's computer-vision and robot-vision group and names him as his supervisor. He receives a Ph.D. in control engineering from Osaka University in 1982.
-
1985–1993
Computer vision projects at Osaka
He is a professor in Osaka University's Faculty of Engineering Science from 1986 to 1993. His KAKEN projects study world models in computer vision and environment modeling by a mobile robot using time-varying stereo imagery in 1985–1986. From 1991 to 1993, he leads a project on active recognition of the environment by omnidirectional vision.
-
1990–1992
President of Japan's AI society
He serves as the third president of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence from 1990 to 1992.
-
1991
Hiroshi Ishiguro's doctorate
At Osaka University, Hiroshi Ishiguro works in Tsuji's graduate laboratory and receives a D.Eng. in systems engineering in 1991. Ishiguro describes him as a very famous professor in computer vision.
-
1994–1999
Professor at Wakayama University
He becomes a professor at Wakayama University in 1994 and serves in its Faculty of Systems Engineering from 1995 to 1999. His projects examine human facial-expression recognition based on a potential field in 1995–1996 and aspect representation of environments in 1997–1999.
-
1996
An IAPR Fellowship
IAPR names him a Fellow in 1996 for contributions to computer vision and outstanding service to the association.
-
1998
Program co-chair at ACCV'98
In 1998, he is one of three program co-chairs of the 3rd Asian Conference on Computer Vision in Hong Kong, with Roland Chin and T.C. Pong of HKUST.
-
March 2023
A JSAI journal reminiscence
In March 2023, the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence publishes Seiji Yamada’s reminiscence of Professor Tsuji in its journal.
