Sabine Süsstrunk
Also known as Sabine Susstrunk, Sabine E. Susstrunk
Sabine Süsstrunk is dean of EPFL's School of Computer and Communication Sciences, and her own research covers computational photography and generative AI. Before joining EPFL in 1999, she worked as a principal imaging researcher at Corbis in Seattle. In 2014 she took over the Images and Visual Representation Laboratory, where her group works on image hallucinations and deepfake detection. She received the 2013 Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year Award, became an IEEE Fellow in 2017, and was appointed president of the Swiss Science Council in 2020. In 2025 she received the Royal Photographic Society Award for Imaging Science.

From 1995 to 1999 she works as principal imaging researcher at Corbis in Seattle.

Joining EPFL and heading IVRL
She joins EPFL in 1999. In 2014 she becomes head of the Images and Visual Representation Laboratory.

Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year
She receives the 2013 Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year Award from the Society of Imaging Science and Technology and the International Society for Optics and Photonics, for work on computational photography and image quality.

Named an IEEE Fellow
She is named an IEEE Fellow in 2017, a grade given to 0.1 percent of the IEEE's members.

President of the Swiss Science Council
In 2020 the Federal Council appoints her president of the Swiss Science Council, and she takes office in 2021.

2024
Hallucinations and deepfake detection
In 2024 she gives a lecture in Stuttgart on image and video hallucinations made by generative models. In 2024 her lab offers delegates at the World Economic Forum in Davos the chance to be deepfaked and to learn about EPFL's deepfake detection work.

Royal Photographic Society award
She receives the 2025 Royal Photographic Society Award for Imaging Science.

Dean of the IC School
She takes up the post of dean of EPFL's School of Computer and Communication Sciences in September 2025, succeeding Rüdiger Urbanke.
