Ruidan Su

Also known as 苏锐丹

Ruidan Su is a computer scientist at Shanghai Jiao Tong University whose research covers machine learning, AI for science and deep reinforcement learning for finance. He completed a Ph.D. in computer application technology at Northeastern University in 2014, founded the Journal of Computational Intelligence and Electronic Systems, and was its editor-in-chief from 2012 to 2016. From 2015 to 2021, he was an assistant professor at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2021 he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Computer Science. He was Conference Chair of MICAD2021, published a deep reinforcement learning method for portfolio management in IET Signal Processing in 2024, and coauthored a 2025 paper on risks in large language model research and development. He is a research assistant professor at the AGI Institute and a Program Committee Chair of MICAD 2026.

  1. 2006–2014

    Ph.D. at Northeastern University

    He earns a B.Eng in Communication Engineering in 2006, then an MSc in Software Engineering in 2010 and a Ph.D. in Computer Application Technology in 2014, both at Northeastern University in China.

  2. 2012–2016

    Founding a computational intelligence journal

    He founds the Journal of Computational Intelligence and Electronic Systems, published by American Scientific Publisher, and serves as its editor-in-chief from 2012 to 2016.

  3. 2015–2021

    Assistant professor at CAS institute

    He is an assistant professor at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2015 to 2021. His work there covers high-speed train control strategy, computational intelligence, software engineering, machine learning and multiple object tracking.

  4. 2020–2021

    Chairing the MICAD conference

    MICAD, an annual conference on medical imaging and computer-aided diagnosis, holds its first edition in 2020, and he serves as Program Chair of the series from that start. He is Conference Chair of MICAD2021, the second edition, planned for Birmingham, UK in March 2021.

  5. 2021

    Joining Shanghai Jiao Tong University

    He joins the School of Computer Science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2021, working on machine learning and AI for science.

  6. 2022–2023

    Text attacks and portfolio selection

    In 2022, he coauthors "Searching for Textual Adversarial Examples with Learned Strategy" with Xiangzhe Guo, Shikui Tu and Lei Xu for the International Conference on Neural Information Processing. In 2023, he coauthors "A Deep Temporal Factor Analysis Method for Large Scale Financial Portfolio Selection" with Yao Zhou, Shikui Tu and Lei Xu for ICASSP in Rhodes Island, Greece.

  7. 2024–2025

    Reinforcement learning and LLM risks

    In 2024, he publishes "A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach for Portfolio Management in Non-Short-Selling Market" in IET Signal Processing with Chun Chi, Shikui Tu and Lei Xu. In 2025, he coauthors "From Data to Deployment: A Comprehensive Analysis of Risks in Large Language Model Research and Development" in IET Information Security with Tianshu Zhang, Anli Zhong, Minwei Fang and Yu-dong Zhang.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research assistant professor at SJTU

    He is a research assistant professor at the AGI Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Computer Science, with research interests in machine learning and AI for science, specifically AI for material design. Together with Yang Yang and Shikui Tu, he is part of the institute's research direction in AI with biology, chemistry and medicine, which includes drug discovery and materials design. He is a Program Committee Chair of MICAD 2026.
