Roman V Belavkin
Also known as Solar X
Roman V Belavkin is an Associate Professor in Informatics at Middlesex University whose research links evolutionary systems, learning and value-of-information theory. He studied physics at Moscow State University and computer science at Nottingham, then joined Middlesex in 2002. His work covers mutation-rate control, symbolic regression for financial models, evolutionary data augmentation for image classification and Bayesian value of information. As Solar X, he released his debut album Outre X Mer in 2024; all tracks came from original DAT tapes and were remastered for the release.

Timeline
-
1988–2002
Physics and a computer science PhD
From 1988 to 1994, he studies for an MSc in Physics at Moscow State University. From 1998 to 2002, he pursues a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Nottingham.
-
2002
Joining Middlesex University
He joins Middlesex University in 2002, where he organizes research seminars for its Artificial Intelligence group.
-
Since 2009
SANDPIT and mutation-rate control
From 2009, he serves as principal investigator of the EPSRC SANDPIT project, “Evolution as an Information Dynamic System,” led by Middlesex University with Manchester, Keele and Warwick. In 2012, his paper tests approximately optimal mutation-rate control functions across 115 complete landscapes of binding scores between DNA sequences and transcription factors.
-
2021
Financial models by symbolic regression
In 2021, he coauthors “Distilling Financial Models by Symbolic Regression” with Gabriele La Malfa, Emanuele La Malfa, Panos M. Pardalos and Giuseppe Nicosia for the Machine Learning, Optimization, and Data Science proceedings.
-
2023
Evolutionary image augmentation
In 2023, he coauthors an evolutionary approach to automated class-specific data augmentation for image classification.
-
2024
Releasing Outre X Mer
His Solar X albums from the 1990s reflect an era of bulletin boards, FTP sites and mailing lists. In 2024, he releases his debut album Outre X Mer. All tracks come from original DAT tapes and are remastered for the release.
-
2025
Bayesian value and Hamming search
In 2025, he coauthors “Value of Information in Bayesian Environments” with Stefan Behringer for the Dynamics of Information Systems conference. His paper “Analysis and Optimization of Probabilities of Beneficial Mutation and Crossover Recombination in a Hamming Space” derives conditions for mutation and recombination radii that maximize the probabilities of mutation and crossover into the optimum.
-
As of October 2026
Associate Professor at Middlesex
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor in Informatics at Middlesex University. His current work studies geometric and dynamic value-of-information theory, with applications in parameter control and optimization of learning, adaptive and evolving systems.
