Rogerio Jorge
Rogerio Jorge is a plasma physicist whose work uses machine learning in plasma models and differentiable simulations for fusion. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Engineering Physics at IST and completed a joint PhD in Physics at IST and EPFL in 2019; his thesis addressed turbulent dynamics at the tokamak edge. His doctoral work received EPFL's Physics Doctoral Thesis Award in 2019 and the EPS Plasma Physics Division PhD Research Award in 2020. After postdoctoral work at the University of Maryland and Max-Planck Institute in Greifswald, he worked as a researcher at IST and joined UW–Madison as an assistant professor in January 2024. As of October 2026, his group focuses on fast, differentiable simulations for plasma physics and fusion energy, with applications to machine learning and reactor design.

By 2019
Engineering physics and a joint PhD
He earns bachelor's and master's degrees in Engineering Physics at IST in Lisbon, then completes a joint PhD in Physics at IST and EPFL in 2019 under Paolo Ricci at the Swiss Plasma Center and Nuno Loureiro at MIT and the University of Lisbon.
-
2019
A model for tokamak turbulence
In 2019, he receives the EPFL Physics Doctoral Thesis Award for his thesis, “A moment-based model for plasma dynamics at arbitrary collisionality.” The model supports numerical simulation of turbulent plasma at the tokamak edge.
-
2020
An EPS plasma physics award
In 2020, he receives the EPS Plasma Physics Division PhD Research Award for his thesis on plasma dynamics at arbitrary collisionality.
-
By 2023
Postdoctoral work and Lisbon research
After his 2019 PhD, he works as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Maryland, then as a Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at the Max-Planck Institute in Greifswald. By 2023, he works as a researcher at IST in Lisbon.
-
January 2024
Assistant professor in UW Physics
In January 2024, he joins the UW–Madison Physics Department as an assistant professor.
-
August 2024
A first NSF grant
In August 2024, his UW–Madison group begins its first grant, a three-year, $500,000 National Science Foundation award titled “Moment Approach to Multiscale Plasmas.”
-
September 2024
Machine learning for plasma models
In September 2024, he and his group plan to use JAX for the machine-learning step in a reduced moment model for plasma dynamics.
-
As of October 2026
Assistant professor and fusion simulations
As of October 2026, he is an assistant professor at UW–Madison. His group focuses on fast, differentiable simulations for plasma physics and fusion energy, with applications to machine learning and reactor design.
