Researcher

Roger W. Brockett

Roger Brockett was a control theorist whose work connected nonlinear systems with robotics and computer vision. Born in 1938, he earned a doctorate at Case Institute of Technology, began teaching at MIT in 1963, and joined Harvard in 1969. He wrote the 1970 textbook Finite Dimensional Linear Systems and developed geometric nonlinear control through work on filtering and estimation. At Harvard, he founded a robotics lab, applied control theory to intelligent machines, and helped establish the Institute for Systems Research with the University of Maryland. His career included major control systems awards, professor emeritus status after retiring from Harvard in 2012, and death in 2023.

Timeline

  1. 1938–1969

    From Ohio to Harvard

Born in 1938, he earns a doctorate at Case Institute of Technology. He begins teaching at MIT in 1963 and joins Harvard in 1969.

  2. 1970

    A linear systems textbook

At MIT, he develops “Finite Dimensional Linear Systems,” a textbook first published in 1970 and later reprinted in SIAM's Classic Series.

  3. 1970s–1980s

    Geometric control to robotics

During the 1970s and 1980s, he lays the foundation for geometric nonlinear control and studies nonlinear filtering and estimation. His research applies control theory to robotics, computer vision, and intelligent machines.

  4. 1983–1984

    Robotics and systems laboratories

In 1983, he founds the Harvard Robotics Laboratory to develop a soft-fingered robot. In 1984, he begins work with Harvard and the University of Maryland to establish the Systems Research Center, now the Institute for Systems Research.

  5. 1989–1991

    Bellman and IEEE awards

In 1989, he receives the Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award. In 1991, he receives the IEEE Control Systems Award.

  6. 2012

    Professor emeritus at Harvard

He retires from Harvard's regular faculty in 2012 and becomes a professor emeritus at Harvard.

  7. 2017

    The Giorgio Quazza Medal

IFAC awards him the 2017 Giorgio Quazza Medal for lifetime contributions to the conceptual foundations of systems and control.

  8. 2023

    Death in 2023

He dies on March 19, 2023.
