Richard P. Lippmann
Richard P. Lippmann is a researcher at MIT Lincoln Laboratory whose 1987 paper "An Introduction to Computing with Neural Nets" won the first IEEE Signal Processing Magazine award and had been cited more than 11,000 times by 2020. A 1989 review in Neural Computation surveyed neural networks for speech recognition, and a 1994 study tested multilayer perceptrons on the risk of death, stroke and renal failure after coronary artery bypass operations at the Lahey Clinic. For DARPA in 1998 and 1999, they led the design and development of the first quantitative, objective and repeatable evaluations of computer intrusion-detection systems, whose datasets are cited in more than 3,100 papers. Lincoln Laboratory gave them a Technical Excellence Award in 2011, and the IEEE elected them a Fellow in 2020, when they were a Lincoln Laboratory Fellow in the Cyber Security and Information Sciences Division investigating automated approaches to machine learning.
Timeline
-
1987
A primer on neural nets
In April 1987, Lippmann publishes "An Introduction to Computing with Neural Nets" in IEEE ASSP Magazine, a review of six neural net models for pattern classification. The paper wins the first IEEE Signal Processing Magazine award, and by 2020 it has been cited more than 11,000 times.
-
1989
Neural nets for speech recognition
In 1989, Neural Computation publishes Lippmann's "Review of Neural Networks for Speech Recognition", which surveys multilayer networks with time delays, physiological front ends and architectures for Viterbi decoding. It reports that multilayer perceptron classifiers are being integrated into conventional continuous-speech recognizers.
-
1994
Predicting bypass surgery risk
In 1994, a NIPS paper by Lippmann, Linda Kukolich and David Shahian tests neural networks on the risk of death, stroke and renal failure in 1257 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass operations at the Lahey Clinic. For predicting mortality, multilayer perceptron networks reach an ROC area of 76.0% and logistic regression reaches 70.5%.
-
1998–2000
DARPA intrusion-detection evaluations
For DARPA in 1998 and 1999, Lippmann leads the design and development of the first quantitative, objective and repeatable evaluations of computer intrusion-detection systems. The 1999 evaluation, published in Computer Networks in 2000 with Joshua Haines, David Fried, Jonathan Korba and Kumar Das, draws eight sites and launches more than 200 instances of 58 attack types. By 2020, the datasets are cited in more than 3,100 papers.
-
2006–2008
Machine learning for security
In 2006, Lippmann and Philip K. Chan publish "Machine Learning for Computer Security" in the Journal of Machine Learning Research, on a special topic of research studies about how machine learning algorithms can help improve the security of computer systems. The Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection symposium (RAID 2008), held at MIT in Cambridge in September 2008, has Lippmann as program chair.
-
2011
A Technical Excellence Award
In 2011, Lincoln Laboratory's Technical Excellence Awards go to Lippmann and Gary F. Hatke. The Director's Office created the awards to recognize exceptional and sustained individual technical excellence that has had a significant impact on a Laboratory research area.
-
2020
IEEE Fellow at Lincoln Laboratory
In 2020, the IEEE elects Lippmann a Fellow for contributions to neural networks and assessment of computer security systems. A Lincoln Laboratory Fellow in the Cyber Security and Information Sciences Division with a 37-year career at the Laboratory, Lippmann is investigating automated approaches to machine learning. A founding board member of the Neural Information Processing Systems conference, Lippmann has also traveled as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.
