Researcher

Reza Olfati-Saber

Reza Olfati-Saber is a control theorist whose work includes consensus and flocking in multi-agent systems. He earned an electrical engineering degree at Sharif University of Technology and master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, then completed postdoctoral work at Caltech. With Richard Murray, he presented a consensus protocol for dynamic agents, published work on flocking, and received two early-career awards at Dartmouth. He later led AI at Sanofi and Ernst & Young and published a 2025 report on regulated industries. He is founder and chief scientist of Wisdom Agent, where his multi-agent AI and distributed-systems research underpins independent verification for AI-generated work.

Timeline

  1. 1994–2001

    Degrees from Sharif and MIT

He earns a B.S. in electrical engineering at Sharif University of Technology in 1994, then an S.M. in 1997 and Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT in 2001.

  2. 2001–2004

    A Caltech postdoc

From 2001 to 2004, he is a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology.

  3. 2003–2006

    Consensus and flocking research

With Richard M. Murray, he presents a consensus protocol at the 2003 American Control Conference that lets dynamic agents reach decisions in a distributed, cooperative way. He and Murray publish “Consensus problems in networks of agents with switching topology and time-delays” in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control in 2004; in 2006, he publishes “Flocking for multi-agent dynamic systems: algorithms and theory” in the journal.

  4. 2008

    An NSF CAREER award

At Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering, he receives an NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award in 2008.

  5. 2009

    A Presidential Early Career Award

The NSF lists him as a 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers recipient for advancing mobile sensor networks and for educational and outreach work in robotics for disaster management and rescue operations.

  6. 2010

A miniature city for smart cars

He says he is one of only two researchers who introduced the importance and applications of consensus problems in networked systems; that idea becomes the basis for distributed control theory. As an assistant professor of engineering at Dartmouth's Thayer School, he applies the theory to “intelligent transportation systems that are aware of human safety.” His team builds a miniature city to test tiny cars whose sensors communicate to avoid collisions.

  7. By 2025

    Sanofi and EY AI leadership

At Sanofi, he leads AI as Vice President and Global Head of AI and Data Analytics, directs AI strategy, and scales a multinational team across four countries. At Ernst & Young, he serves as Managing Director and Chief AI Scientist, leading the global AI practice for regulated industries. In August 2025, he publishes “Why AI Fails in Regulated Industries,” a research report based on AI implementation patterns in healthcare, financial services, and pharmaceuticals.

  8. As of October 2026

    Founder of Wisdom Agent

As of October 2026, he is founder and chief scientist of Wisdom Agent, Inc., which builds independent verification for AI-generated work, beginning with law. His twenty-five years of research in multi-agent AI and distributed systems form the theoretical foundation for the company's work. In September 2026, he writes “The Frontier AI Slowdown Is a Pricing Event”; in October 2026, he writes “The Essential Flaw in AI Regulation Accord.”
