Piotr Faliszewski

Piotr Faliszewski is a computer scientist and EurAI Fellow who studies the algorithms and computational complexity of elections, a field known as computational social choice. After studying at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków from 1999 to 2004, they completed doctoral studies at the University of Rochester under Lane Hemaspaandra, then in 2009 published "How Hard Is Bribery in Elections?" in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and joined the AGH Institute of Computer Science. Honours followed: the Polityka Research Prize in 2013, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award in 2018 and an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2020, along with a full professorship in 2021. They served as program co-chair of AAMAS in 2022 and joined the EurAI Fellows in 2023. They are a professor at AGH, where they run the NCN Maestro project AGREE.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2008

Kraków studies and a Rochester PhD

They study computer science at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków from 1999 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008, they do doctoral studies in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Rochester under Lane Hemaspaandra, with a dissertation titled Manipulation of Elections: Algorithms and Infeasibility Results.

  2. 2009

    Bribery complexity in JAIR

In 2009, they coauthor "How Hard Is Bribery in Elections?" in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research; the paper asks how hard it is for an outside party to pay voters so that a chosen candidate wins and proves a dichotomy for scoring protocols. They also join the AGH Institute of Computer Science in 2009 as an assistant professor, a post they hold until 2015.

  3. 2013

    A Polityka Research Prize

In 2013, they win the Polityka Research Prize in technical sciences, awarded by the Polish newsmagazine Polityka for their work on the complexity of and algorithms for election-related problems. They also earn their habilitation at AGH in 2013, based on the monograph Narzędzia algorytmiczne dla wyborów.

  4. 2015–2016

    Properties of multiwinner voting rules

In 2015, they coauthor Properties of Multiwinner Voting Rules with Edith Elkind, Piotr Skowron and Arkadii Slinko; the paper studies SNTV, Bloc, k-Borda, STV and variants of Chamberlin–Courant's and Monroe's rules against a set of desirable properties. They become an associate professor at AGH in 2015 and spend the academic year 2015/2016 as a visiting professor at the Université Paris-Dauphine in France.

  5. 2018

    A Bessel Research Award

In 2018, they receive the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. From 2018 to 2020, they are also a visiting professor at the Technische Universität Berlin.

  6. 2020

    An ERC Consolidator Grant

In 2020, they win an ERC Consolidator Grant of nearly EUR 1.4 million for the project "Pragmatics of Multiwinner Voting: Algorithms and Preference Data Analysis". The project, PRAGMA, runs from 2021 to 2026 and looks for algorithms that make fair and easy-to-understand decisions on which candidates, players or grassroots projects to select.

  7. 2022–2023

    Program co-chair and EurAI Fellow

In 2022, they are program co-chair of the 21st International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) and receive a Minister of Education and Science award for remarkable achievements in science. In 2023, they join the EurAI Fellows, a group recognised for lasting contributions to artificial intelligence in Europe.

  8. As of October 2026

    AGH professor running AGREE

They are a professor at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, a full professor since 2021, and run the NCN Maestro project AGREE for 2026 to 2031. Their research covers computational social choice, preference aggregation and the complexity of elections, and they sit on Poland's Council for Research Excellence. In 2025, they coauthor "Drawing a Map of Elections", a framework that places elections as points in the plane so that similar elections lie close together.
