Researcher

Edith Elkind

Edith Elkind is a computer scientist whose research brings algorithms to collective choice, voting, and coalition formation. She earned degrees in mathematics at Moscow State University and computer science at Princeton, then held research and faculty posts at Warwick, Liverpool, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Southampton, and Nanyang Technological University before joining Oxford. Her work includes a book on cooperative game theory and papers on committee voting that study representation for groups of voters. She chaired IJCAI-2023's program and received research awards from IJCAI and ACM SIGAI. In 2024, she joined Northwestern as a Ginni Rometty Professor of Computer Science, and she is a EurAI Fellow.

Timeline

  1. By 2013

    From Moscow to Oxford

She earned an MA in mathematics from Moscow State University and a computer science PhD from Princeton in 2005. After postdoctoral work at Warwick, Liverpool, and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she held faculty roles at Southampton and Nanyang Technological University before joining Oxford in 2013.

  2. 2012

    Computing cooperative games

With Georgios Chalkiadakis and Michael J. Wooldridge, she coauthored Computational Aspects of Cooperative Game Theory, a survey of cooperative game methods that covers compact game representations and ways to compute solution concepts such as the core and Shapley value.

  3. 2015–2017

    Rules for fair committees

A 2015 paper with Haris Aziz, Markus Brill, Vincent Conitzer, Rupert Freeman, and Toby Walsh proposed justified representation for approval-based committee voting. The axiom requires the winning committee to include an approved candidate for at least one member of every sufficiently large voter group that agrees on the same candidate. A 2017 paper with Piotr Faliszewski, Piotr Skowron, and Arkadii Slinko studied properties of multiwinner voting rules.

  4. 2020–2025

    Leading the IJCAI program

She served as an IJCAI trustee from 2020 to 2025 and as program chair for IJCAI-2023.

  5. 2021–2023

    Honors in AI research

ACM SIGAI named her recipient of its 2023 Autonomous Agents Research Award. She received IJCAI's 2021 Distinguished Paper Award, and her research covers computational social choice and multi-agent systems with AI applications.

  6. Since November 2024

    Joining Northwestern

She joined Northwestern Engineering's Department of Computer Science in November 2024 as a Ginni Rometty Professor of Computer Science. Her research focuses on algorithmic foundations for collective decision-making, especially voting, participatory budgeting, and coalition formation.

  7. As of October 2026

    A EurAI fellowship

    She is a EurAI Fellow.
