Patricia Melín

Also known as Elba Patricia Melin Olmeda, Patricia Melin

Patricia Melín is a computer scientist in Tijuana, Mexico, who builds hybrid intelligent systems that combine modular neural networks, type-2 fuzzy logic and bio-inspired optimization, with medical diagnosis as a main application. A Doctor Habilitatus (D.Sc.) from the Polish Academy of Sciences, she joined the Tijuana Institute of Technology in 1998 and has headed its Hybrid Neural Intelligent Systems research group since 2000. With Oscar Castillo she wrote books including Soft Computing and Fractal Theory for Intelligent Manufacturing (2003) and Type-2 Fuzzy Logic: Theory and Applications (2008). She was president of NAFIPS from 2016 to 2018, a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2017 and 2018, and a winner of the IFSA Outstanding Application Award in 2021 and the NAFIPS Fu Award in 2022. Elsevier honored her in March 2026 with its "Mujeres que Transforman México" prize, and she is a researcher in the Graduate Program in Computing at TecNM – Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2000

Professor and group head in Tijuana

She joins the Graduate Division of the Tijuana Institute of Technology as a professor of computer science in 1998. Her Doctor Habilitatus (D.Sc.) in computer science comes from the Polish Academy of Sciences, with the dissertation "Hybrid Intelligent Systems for Pattern Recognition using Soft Computing". In 2000, she becomes head of the research group on Hybrid Neural Intelligent Systems.

  2. 2003–2008

    Books with Oscar Castillo

She coauthors books with Oscar Castillo, published by Springer-Verlag, among them Soft Computing and Fractal Theory for Intelligent Manufacturing in 2003 and Type-2 Fuzzy Logic: Theory and Applications in 2008.

  3. 2016–2018

    NAFIPS president and SMIA Fellow

In 2016, she and Oscar Castillo are elected Fellows of the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (SMIA). She serves as president of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS) from 2016 to 2018.

  4. 2017–2018

    Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher

Clarivate Analytics names her a Highly Cited Researcher in computer science in 2017 and 2018, placing her among the top 1% of cited authors in the area.

  5. 2020

    Hybrid systems for medical diagnosis

She is an invited speaker at the BioInfoMed 2020 symposium, where she presents hybrid intelligent systems for automated medical diagnosis. Modular neural networks learn from patient data, type-2 fuzzy rules combine the module outputs, and bio-inspired optimization tunes the networks and the fuzzy systems; the approach is applied to hypertension, arrhythmia and diabetes diagnosis and to the detection of pulmonary diseases.

  6. 2021–2022

    Three awards in fuzzy systems

The International Fuzzy Systems Association gives her its Outstanding Application Award in 2021 for fuzzy models in medical diagnosis. In 2022, she receives the NAFIPS K. S. Fu Award for contributions to the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society and the INFUS Lotfi A. Zadeh Memorial Award for contributions to the field of fuzzy sets and systems.

  7. March 2026

Elsevier prize for AI in medicine

In March 2026, she receives the Elsevier Prize 2026 "Mujeres que Transforman México" (Women Who Transform Mexico) in the category of innovative leaders in environmental, social and economic solutions. The prize recognizes her artificial-intelligence work on early diagnosis and risk stratification for hypertension and cardiovascular disease, including a hybrid method that classifies hypertension risk and forecasts the probability of cardiovascular disease over 4 to 10 years.

  8. As of October 2026

    Computing researcher at TecNM Tijuana

She is a researcher in the Graduate Program in Computing at TecNM – Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana. By March 2026, she has directed more than 100 master's and doctoral theses and has nearly 1,000 indexed articles, 20 authored books, 30 edited books and more than 26,000 Google Scholar citations, with an h-index of 88.
